TIL: Pekka Rautakallio played in the 1982 NHL All-Star game making him the 1st Finn in history to play NHL all-star game.

In 1995 the best defenceman award in Finnish elite league was named after Pekka Rautakallio who was the 1st winner of the award in 1978.

I only remember him because of his name. I had not yet been to a Flames game when he wore the best uniform of all time. I don't remember how good he was, but he did put up decent numbers.

Unfortunately I can easily confuse him with Scary Kari Eloranta. At least, I hope Pekka wasn't Scary bad like Kari... you folks who complain about defensemen who have bad giveaways in their own zone probably forget or never got to watch Eloranta. I was but a young'un when he played for the Flames and I certainly remember his poor play.

Today I Learned: Tyrone Garner's only NHL start was an emergency call up straight from juniors (Oshawa Generals) to the Flames during the 1998-99 NHL season. I vaguely remember this from 20 years ago.

Quote:
The Flames used a franchise-record six goaltenders during the 1998-99 campaign — Ken Wregget, Tyler Moss, Jean-Sebastien Giguere, Andrei Trefilov, Garner and finally Fred Brathwaite.

Fun fact

Flames traded Aaron Johnson & 2010 or 2011 3rd round pick (Flames choice) (2011 #73-Travis Ewanyk) to Edmonton Oilers for Steve Staios

It was the first ever trade between Calgary Flames & Edmonton Oilers

Maybe his finest moment with Calgary in this game.

I cannot tell you how long I jumped around my rec room after he scored that goal. I think I screamed myself hoarse. Staios was a beauty and I loved that he was a Flame.

The 2010-11 season started badly but was really good hockey from about Christmas to March, shame the flames fell just short of the playoffs.

I was at that game and it was funny even when they were down 4-1 I didn’t think they would lose. When Staios tied it I get screaming STAIOS!!!!!! And had so many Oiler fans pissed off at me telling me to shut up and sit down. Our playoff hopes were hanging by the smallest of threads but we didn’t let the Oilers spoil it.

Man, that Staios goal was so much fun. One I'll always remember for sure.

Derek Morris turns 40 today. Has always been one of my favourite past Flames players.

FYI - looks like he's coaching high school hockey where his kids go to school in Arizona.

Happy birthday Marek Hrivík and all the best in the KHL

Marek signed in KHL with HC Vityaz joining former Flames goalie Joni Ortio. Interesting read about Hrivik and Ortio and some tidbits about their time with the Flames.

Happy Birthday Jonas Hoglund. Jonas broke into the NHL during the 1996-97 season with teammate and fellow rookie Jarome Iginla.

Happy Birthday Craig Conroy

One of my favourite Flames of all time for the passion and emotion he showed (as seen in this classic interview from 2004 playoffs).

I just watched that Staios video and at one point there was a 1-2 second clip with a huge number 13 for the Flames. It was jarring because I am so used to the little 13 we have now.

Ẁho is that?`I thought to myself. 'Cammalleri? No way too big'. I had to go to the Elite Prospects site and look up the 2010-11 roster. Jokinen of course.

I follow this team pretty close and it surprises me how effectively I have erased his existence as a Flame from my memory.

Also Pekka Rautakallio still makes the top 6 D of my all-time Flames team. Along with Reinhart. Those two were awesome in the first 2 seasons.
