I was sooo POed about that trade. I even hated Doug Risebrough for it.
In later years I would realise that economics played a large part. Basically though our x-GM became Toronto's GM and raped us.

Especially considering we fired Gilbert right after this deal...I am steamed about it too!

I was a big fan of the 6th Backstreet boy.

The Flames got back that 2nd round draft pick with Cammalleri for the 17th overall...I think.

Here's 2 bonehead trades by Fletcher in 1988 that almost derailed the '89 Cup run:

06-Mar-88
To The Calgary Flames - Craig Coxe
To The Vancouver Canucks - Brian Bradley, Peter Bakovic and Kevan Guy

06-Sep-88
To The Calgary Flames - 1989 3rd Round selection (Veli-Pekka Kautonen)
To The Vancouver Canucks - Paul Reinhart and Steve Bozek

Bradley and Reinhart starred for the Canucks in the opening round of the '89 playoffs, and the Flames were very lucky to get out of the first round. The Flames got essentially nothing in return.

Bradley was a promising prospect who later turned into a pretty solid NHL regular, but the roster was pretty deep and he probably wouldn't have cracked the Flames' line-up. However, Reinhart was pretty close to being the Flames' best player (when not injured). But look at the dogs Fletcher got in return. Reinhart always showed up for the playoffs, and as an elite player, Fletcher should have got more for him than he did - certainly worth more than a third round pick. I always thought that the Flames could have parked Reinhart on the injured list for most of the season and revived him for the playoffs. He sure would have come in handy when Suter went down.

Just like to say that this is an awesome thread. It's good to see that the Flames made some huge deals to get them the first cup. Most of the deals leading up to the 89 cup run were phenominal while I was sad that some players were trade for almost nothing in return. Then after the cup, the dark years came. As good as Fletcher was as a GM, he certainly could've killed the Flames at times and he killed the Flames after he left. Through the years with other GM's in effect, you can also see some huge deals to get Iggy, Regher, and Kippr. But I still can't believe we lost so many good players as well. I didn't even know Joey Mullen was traded until I heard his name in Pittsburg. At first I thought it was his brother. Then, I had to deal with the sad fact that he was no longer a Flames. So, basically, the Flames got nothing in return.

Even as good as Sutter is this year, he's also made some really good trades and some really bad decisions as well in which we basically got nothing back from some of the transactions. Guess you win some and you lose some. I just hope everything works out this year so that we all can enjoy another deep run in the playoffs.

Yep, Minny claimed Vernon in the expansion draft June 23, 2000 then right away traded him to Calgary.

amazing how many deals for draft picks suck after the fact due to poor drafting

I found it funny we traded for Steve Bozek twice, and traded him away twice as well.

Didn't realize we have two 2nd rounders in 2011. Darryl's gonna make a huge trade. Sarich + 2nd 2011 + 2nd 2011 for a pending UFA at the draft ala the Tanguay deal (Patrick Marleau because San Jose will realize they need to build their defense a bit thanks to Blake sucking in the playoffs then retiring)
