Default Issues with Quoting, Editing...

I'm running into intermittent issues with quoting and editing posts lately. Anyone else?

Example, this post: https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showpo...&postcount=186

That's my own post. If I quote or edit it, the editor window shows up completely blank. But then other posts by me might work. It appears to be random. Same thing with quoting the posts of others, sometimes the editor window just shows up blank.

I've tried Internet Explorer 11, Edge on 1803, and Firefox Quantum 60.0.1, and I've tried on different machines. All exhibit the same behavior for the same posts.

It used to be just Firefox, has it spread to other browsers now? It happens when there is a non-standard character, like an accent. Even quote marks that have direction(left or right) cause it.

Yeah it's basically special characters, some new browsers and the old forum Javascript.

I will maybe try and patch the forum software as much as I can to see if there's any fixes for it in the code.

I often can't quote or edit on Firefox - I get the blank box.

What is a "Special Character"? I don't think I'm typing anything unusual.

The other thing that is happening - extra line spacing is being inserted in my posts - I can't edit it to make it look better on Firefox, but I can on my apple devices.

[this post I was able to edit the spacing - sometimes though I get the blank box]

The way computers store and display characters is kind of grouped into groups (an artifact of how things have developed over the years). A special character in this case means anything not in the really ancient set of characters.

And it can be almost anything. Quotation marks for example have many different versions.. there's the basic version which looks like this: "", and then there's the special version which looks more like what you'd see in print: “ ”. Or apostrophes ‘ ’ vs ' '

Usually the characters come from someone copying and pasting from another website and the special characters are being used by the website. Even blank spaces can be special, hyphens, etc.

Firefox seems to be the only one affected, Chrome works ok or as you say browsers on mobile devices.

I plan to do a minor update to the forum software to see if it fixes the issue.

Just an FYI that it's not fixed, still having this issue in Firefox. Whenever I want to quote something I usually have to open up Chrome to do it
