Howard has to be on the move now - Wings in serious cap trouble, even with Franzen going to LTIR

They are cap compliant once Franzen and Vitale go on LTIR.

Good deal for a starting goalie IMO.

Due to their cap issues I would love to pry Brendan Smith out of Detroit if possible - perfect partner for Hamilton IMO.

Crazy that they are spending a combined $8M for Abdelkader and Helm.

Brendan Smith is the type of player that gets eaten alive by message boards. He is one of those guys that makes totally boneheaded mistakes. He has always projected as an offensive defenseman, but has rarely done much to fill that role. However, he has rarely been given PP time over the years that would have really helped his numbers. But as someone that has had a tough time totally quitting the Wings, I still watch most of their games, and Smith has continued to be unimpressive.

So is this an example of the infamous "bridge deal" that people talk about?

Edit: Or, is this an example of a goalie having a pretty good contract year, but the team being cautious before backing up a Luongo-sized Brinks truck?

Isn't that the point of a bridge deal for the team?
