Default GPS tracker for child

I am looking for a device that I can put on a kid, in their backpack/jacket etc that will allow for them to be tracked from a PC or smartphone.

Ideally this device would require no user intervention, require limited charging and be small enough that it won't cause issues as far as weight goes.

I realize that a smart phone can do the same thing, so this might actually be an option if the cost is low enough.

All the ones I've seen are kind of chunky or imbedded into some huge watch. Would be nice to find one that's a little more low-profile.

Too bad we can't just chip em!

Long story short, a parent I know is having issues with a kid not being where they are supposed to be and they would like alternatives as far as keeping tags on their location.

It is a lot more complex than that, but that's the basic idea. Since it isn't my child, I really don't want to give out to much info.

There are a lot of free security apps for smartphones with a gps-based "find my phone" function bundled in (example). Best approach for this would be to play up the other reasons for installing this kind of app.

Not really sure that this helps but I found this item to be neat. I don't think it actively transmits constantly though/findable on maps in the nature needed.

Ya, fair enough. I just was thinking with the ages of your kids that you would probably be able to keep track of them, but then maybe you let them take the C-Train across the city or something!

This is actually what my wife suggested when she called and asked me about it.

Technically, it would work, but only if the app had enough penetration in the market, since any tile can be tracked by any app and then transmit the location back to the owner.

I doubt that it is at that stage yet, though.

I half-joked about implanting a GPS chip in my son shortly after he was born.

Sometimes I kinda wish I did.

If I have a daughter, I definitely would implant one.

edit: Except it looks like it is $150 every 3 months for tracking. At that price a smart phone on Wind make a ton more sense.

The limited charging is going to be the biggest barrier I think. The Brickhouse Spark looks like the best option that is currently out.

What about those dog gps devices. I believe they have a monitoring fee but I would assume they are cheaper

I agree the Spark is the best option, but the cost is higher than a smart phone, so I will just suggest that.

Thanks everyone for your input.
