Looks like the camp invite may have left a good impression
Torie Peterson @ToriePeterson
Quick note on the #Flames recent signing, Connor Mackey: he attended development camp in Calgary in 2017 - a history with the club. Kid has a ton of potential, high ceiling.

This is the great side of our management team.
This is a huge get for Calgary. I would be stoked if we had drafted this guy a couple years ago with a 2nd rd pick. I hope it works out, but either way great work!

Burning a year of an ELC is a common practice where NHL teams sign a player out of college/junior/Europe late in the season with a contract that starts in that season. This counts as a year of their contract.
In Mackey's case, to burn his contract a team would have started his contract this season. After which he would have been RFA. Being RFA has the advantage of more contract flexibility in negotiations as it doesn't have any of the restrictions an ELC contract does. Mainly the player can ask for a 1 way deal.

Prospect depth on D is particularly weak, so this fills an organizational need. Really good news. Mackey in particular could be a good one.

Impromptu defense prospect rankings (based on perceived potential):
1. Valimaki
2. Mackey
3. Yelesin
4. Lerby
5. Poolman
6. Valiev
7. Nielsen
Nice to have a wee bit of depth there for a change. Four of those guys have been added to the org in the last 12 months.

I like the upside of Mackey. Apparently his home-isolation advanced stats are off the charts.
Poolman seems like more of a shelter in place type d-man.

Definitely gives the Flames flexibility to use a lot of their defenders as assets still despite expiring contracts.

Connor Mackey was invited to the Calgary Flames; summer prospect camp in 2017 following his final year of junior hockey and prior to starting his college hockey career at Minnesota State.
“I got a little taste there,” he said. “That started the whole process.”
|
Quote:
Mackey, 23. could have turned pro following his sophomore season but, after taking a week to think about it, opted to return to Minnesota State for another year. Prior to his junior season, he met with representatives with seven teams, including Calgary.
“I had built a relationship with them and was comfortable with them,” Mackey said. “That hasn’t changed since Day 1. When I made my decision to come back to school, they respected that. …
“I wanted to be part of that organization. I’m pumped.”

Treliving says he thinks both Mackey and Poolman are close to playing in the NHL.
Calls Mackey an all around d-man. Not a dynamic player. Because of his reach and mobility thinks he is going to be a match up guy.
Poolman is a highly competitive and character player. Hard defender plays with an edge. Going to kill penalties. Doesn't just whack the puck around the boards.
Credits Conroy and Bill Powers for getting these signings done.

Treliving on 960 says they are still hoping to sign a college UFA forward. Expecting word in the next couple of days.

Nice change of pace compared to having some idiot say he won't sign with the team despite the team spending a draft pick on him.

Always great to hear we are getting to top person on the board. As a free asset makes it even better.

Yelesin (R) is probably ready for a 5-7 depth position on the Flames come September.
Lerby (L)
Mackey (L)
Poolman (L)
(in no particular order)
