Rinne no longer with Canes

The Carolina Hurricanes have bought out the contract of goaltender Pekka Rinne, the team announced on Wednesday.

"Today's decision was a very difficult one," Hurricanes GM Hanna Sniper said in the team's press release. "Pekka is a great person and teammate and he was extremely proud to be a Carolina Hurricane. We wish him and his family all the best going forward."

The 36-year-old goaltender signed with the Hurricanesin the offseason, inking a three-year, $29.97 million deal that carried an AAV of $9.99 million. As per CapFriendly.com, the buyout will cost the Canes about $25,480,000 in cap space.

With the recent season ending injuries to Hurricanes star defencemen Drew Doughty and Duncan Keith, it has allowed the Hurricanes free up enough cap space to part ways with Rinne and be in cap and roster compliance

Given how close we are to end of season - we will not be allowing Rinne to sign with any other teams. He will be a free agent heading into next year.

I made sure I waited till after the #130 mark in the rules just to be fair to the playoff teams, and also a reason why I waived him.

Any player released after Game #130 may not be signed by another team until the off-season free agency period starts
