Some only have to go back to the Bouwmeester, threads to see how negative some people were. He went on to win a cup with the Blues but was not good enough for some to play for the Flames.

Jaybo was also on team Canada a year later winning a gold medal
Bennett is way different though, guy is a decent NHLer but nothing special. Flames got good value.

Similarities don't end there. I remember that I couldn't stand Bouwmeester for almost his entire time here, and wanted him gone. Hartley gets hired, and suddenly it was like a switch got flipped, and Bouwmeester just started looking like a really good 2-way defencemen. I didn't want him traded, and he left for pennies on the dollar I felt.
I think that's an example of how a poor coach can negatively impact a player. Was Sam suffering from the same under consecutive coaching hires? I bet he was, but it remains to be seen. I hope he does well in Florida. That's a solid start with a solid opportunity.

The problem with Bouwmeester was ironically similar - it was also utilization. You have to recognize what a player is and put him in a position to succeed
You’re not going to win when he is *the guy* getting the top minutes and toughest assignments.
He is great in the top 4, but not clear cut #1 where all the other D are a step below. Also Brent’s style was awful for his skill set
Also agreed that Hartley restored the player and value
Glad to see him succeed with proper situation and deployment

Quite the debut for Sam. Happy for him and I hope he does well in Florida under Q.
That said, Joe Colborne once had a hat trick in his Colorado debut. It happens.

Dude didn't put out on a consistent basis for us.
He won't long term for Florida either. New team boost feels pretty expected.

Holy ####. It's one good game from Bennett so far. Let's pump the brakes a bit. He scored 4 goals once too .. he had a good game but consistency has never been there. Let see how this reflects in a year.
He will be in that tier with Galchenyuk, Duclair etc journeyman stage again.

This has happened once or twice, but it's nothing like the exodus of players who have enjoyed career resurrections when escaping from Edmonton.

It probably helps that he gets to play with Huberdeau.

Yes, but that was always one of the complaints in Calgary. He rarely got to play with good players for an extended period of time. Nobody was going to put up points playing on the 4th line with Jankowski and Rieder.

Except those two when killing off one of Bennett’s penalties.

Fully agree. Would’ve been nice to see him and Gaudreau have a shot together without Monahan there and Bennett at C.
Part of me wishes we kept him because of how well he played under Sutter, but another part of me is happy that he gets to start a new chapter with another top notch coach in Joe Q. He’s always had inconsistency issues so here’s to hoping that it changes in a different organization.

I have always thought that this was a bogus complaint. In those opportunities where Bennett did get to play with "good players" he sure didn't do much.

How in the world could anyone justify that line combo? Monahan may not be an elite centre but he’s much better in pretty much every aspect of that position than Bennett. Bennett was playing better under Sutter. On the 4th line, with Ryan and Nordstrom or Ritchie.

I am fairly sure this is something we actually did see at the end of the 2018 season when Monahan was injured, and it sucked.
I recall being excited to see Bennett given a stretch with Gaudreau, and came away convinced that he is just not a top-six forward.
