Steinberg wrote an article on flamesnation about Rasmus

He took 3 years data from NaturalStatTrick

Quote:

Season GP TOI/G CA/60 GA/60 XGA/60 SCA/60 HDCA/60 OZS%
18-19 79 13.51 52.6 1.92 1.98 23.17 8.98 57.9
19-20 70 16.29 55.0 2.29 2.13 24.32 8.83 49.8
20-21 56 16.28 54.9 2.73 2.34 26.62 11.3 46.0
Quote:
According to Natural Stat Trick, per 60 minutes no Flames skater was on the ice for more high danger chances against than Andersson at even strength. A stark contrast to the year previous when he had the lowest high danger chance against rate amongst Flames defensemen and ranked second on the team as a whole at 5v5.

The even strength defensive drop off was marked, especially considering his defensive impact had been quite strong the previous two seasons.
Also had this chart comparing Flames D last year

^0% defensive ranking for Draisaitl? He's literally not better than any other centers defensively?

Now THAT matches the eye test. Brutal.

So I have a loose concept of "Finishing", but what's the statistical definition of of it for the purposes of these charts? For that matter, what are QoC and QoT?

Thanks for this thread and for sharing the info.

Finishing: An estimate of how a player contributes to his team through his ability to score on the shots he takes above what is expected based on the expected goal model.

Interesting to look at the similarities between Regehr and Zadorov's cards.

Regehr played against higher quality opponents (but both weren't protected). Zadorov better finishing, but similar in offence/defense.

That threat of a big crushing hit on the back end cannot be underestimated. It puts free wheeling forwards that feast on us in our own zone on alert. Sometimes that alone curbs creativity, something we havent had that in a long time.

If Zadorov comes even close to Regehr on ice it would bode well for the Flames.

So WAR is an all-in number correct, considering both offense and defense?

So those cards say Regehr was one of the very worst defensemen in the league from ages 28-30? So are those cards all BS or do we collectively owe Jay an apology?

I suspect they under rate defense and physicality. Or maybe the so called eye test overrates those things?

The nice thing about the free agents is that he seems to keep up and post up to date analysis of them. Here is Blake Coleman. This also matches the eye test for me

I don't think that card is fair to Regehr. That's near the end of his career when he could barely skate.

I want to see a card for 2007 Regehr.

It does lead one to look differently at that Buffalo trade.

Not in the pretty card format but there was an article with some Lindholm stats here

https://thewincolumn.ca/2021/06/08/h...up-contenders/

Quote:
In terms of just points, his 47 points in 56 games ranked 18th in the league among centres. His 19 goals and 28 assists were both 16th. It’s his underlying numbers that really show he can’t compete with the top dogs just yet though. His 52.78 CF% was 37th among centres league-wide with at least 600 minutes at 5v5. His 52.25 xGF% was 41st and his HDCF% of 51.53 was 42nd.

Over the past three seasons his CF% ranks 36th among centres, his xGF% ranks 51st and his HDCF% ranks 52nd. Lindholm is a very good centre, but he can’t compete with the best of the best in the NHL.

I wonder how this changes if that Tkachuk Lindholm Gaudreau line sticks

The worst part about that trade was the inclusion of the 2nd to force buffalo to take Kotalik.
Mistakes compounding mistakes.

You acquire a bad player then have to give up an asset not too long later to motivate a team to take him off your hands.

Over the long-term Regehr for Byron 1 for 1 would have been reasonable.

Acquiring Kotalik was bad.

But if you believe Feaster the trade was Byron for a 2nd. Regehr and Kotalik for Butler.

So one way to look at is 2 cap dumps for a bad player in Butler (who was then grossly misused).

A second for Byron is a good trade. Waiving him was dumb.

I thought it was the opposite - that he had said the 2nd was included to get them to take Kotalik. But it was a long time ago.
