Sounds like they don't have a lot of options right now...What else can they do?

Lets wait and see if it can outcompete Delta. Also, it is highly unlikely to get around vaccine coverage without a significant change to the spike protein.

Finally, Dr. Eric Ding is the worst follow on twitter for this. Grifter trying to make money off the fear of COVID

Did you miss the post right after that? Or the estimate that Europe may have 700,000 Covid deaths this winter?

Don't know much about the guy, but if the graph he posted is actually correct, it looks like delta is getting smacked down by it...

Ding is not the only one worried about this new variant. The WHO had an emergency meeting, the UK implemented a travel ban, and it's thought to be outcompeting Delta. Not great.

Ya, I'm with you, that sounds horrific.

There are really low infection rates where it is right now. So when numbers are low it can look really bad. Once it hits places with Higher infection rates we should know more.

Worth looking into, but really too early to be concerned.

This is exactly when we should be concerned. Not scared, not freaking out, but definitely concerned.

Sure. Bad wording. The problem is the reporting of "Its spike protein is different and might get around vaccination".

Sounds like what I said in Jan of 2020. Just a flu! Nothing to be concerned about!

My workplace recently implemented a twice a week testing requirement for all staff, including the fully vaccinated. When I mentioned this to a friend in the UK, she was surprised we were only doing so now. They've had to do it all along (she works at a school).

Though in most of the UK, they are using extra testing in place of masking in classrooms and the use of cohorts.

Rapid testing, treatment, plus vaccines and continued booster shots are the best weapons going forward. Luckily in Canada we have some of the highest vaccination rates in the world. Once we get our hands on the various treatments from Pfizer and Merck, we will have many weapons to fight this, however this fight is clearly not over.

Interesting, I wonder if that's one of the reasons their numbers are so bad compared to ours.

Pretty amazing turn around on tests today. We were able to book appointments in Okotoks for the whole crew at 10 AM and got our results at 8 PM, so less than 10 hours. Thankfully, all negative. The kids must have brought a bad cold home from day home. This is the sickest I’ve been since Christmas 2019 and the pre-schooler is completely stuffed up.

What’s the timeline for variant vaccines?

I know they created these first vaccines in like 6 weeks followed by months of testing. Does the approval / getting to manufacturing decrease for new variants. I add assumed we would be getting Delta boosters rather than regular boosters.

Adusting a vaccine can probably be done in a week. But trialing (even just for antibody response and safety), mass producing, and distributing them takes a while.

The reason we don't have Delta-specific vaccines is because they didn't really make much of a difference. There isn't whole lot of immune escape from it (peak efficacy against it was still in the 90% range). It's just way more infectious which a vaccine can't fix.
