I want to replace our upstairs TV with the one currently on the main floor and buy an OLED, but there's no way the wife will go for that anytime soon. I'm very militant on the kids not touching the downstairs TV, but I let them do whatever they want to the one upstairs. Older Samsung units seem to be tanks though, it's taken a load of abuse but still has no problems other than some scratches

I've been waiting for one of mine to go for 12 yrs! And it's the youngest I have. It just wont' die. Didn't help that I thought it would be cool to fix the samsung that had the well known power on problem, that seems to have breathed an extended life into that one....

I think it's beyond time I just go get one.

I'm not even sure why you would bother with the latter.

It's like they say when you're faced with an all-in for poker. "It's so cheap you cannot afford NOT to buy it".

Don't wives usually know nothing about TVs? Why not just screw with the picture settings like brightness, gamma, contract and tint until it's all wonky and then let the kids go, "OMG the TV is dead!" so that you can pull the trigger?

If the kids are smart and old enough to fix it, bribe them to be in on the ploy.

I think we see the price of OLEDs come down in the next 12 months...the mark up on OLED units right now is much much higher than on traditional LEDS.

I finally bit the bullet on a new TV this year after getting a PS5 and wanting something 4K. Ended up getting the 85inch Sony X91J, and getting that delivered tomorrow. Super excited, as I haven't bought a new TV in 11 years.

Only crappy thing is it's not the same processor as the X90J, and VRR is going to be through a firmware update. But since PS5 doesn't even have VRR yet, I still went with the Sony over Samsung because I wanted a backlit TV rather than an edge lit. Couldn't justify paying more for the X95J though lol.

Does OLED or QLED make much of a difference if getting one

For source material like movies, HBO-type dramas, etc, the difference between OLED and the next best displays is bigger than the difference between top end non-OLED and mid tiers. For sports and other bright stuff, OLED is better, but probably not worth the premium price.

If you can afford, OLED is definitely the way to go. I was reluctant to spend the price they were going for a year or two ago, but picked up a used 65 in LG and will hopefully never go back to non-OLED.

If you're not in a hurry I'd hold off until at least next year when Samsung will release their QD-OLED TV's

https://www.cnet.com/tech/home-enter...thing-we-know/

Also Micro LED's are supposed to be coming soon, which should equal OLED for accurate colors and perfect blacks while being brighter with no possibility of burn-in. At the very least more competition in the high-end TV space should bring down prices

Perfect! That'll probably be my dip into OLED. Still very happy with getting an open box TCL 75" with best buy warranty, followed by a little ghosting and Best Buy showing up with a brand new one at the door.

Alright so it's looking like I will be needing a new TV, the last little while maybe once a day the tv would turn off and on, but it would turn right back on. Then the last couple days it was happening multiple times and taking much longer to turn back on. Of course this was happening when my wife wasn't around until last night, so now I have proof that we need a new tv.

We are also limited to 55" TV due to how living room is set up, maybe 60"

So quickly looking online and noticed they have 4k, QLED and OLED, i just assumed all TV's were 4k now. Do I still try and go for OLED if the price is affordable?

The biggest noticeable difference for OLEDs is blacks are actually black. If you think about a dark scene in a movie on a lot of TVs, it will look a washed out grey. On OLED, since the blacks are true blacks, you will see all the intended details in the scene. Letter boxes for wide screen movies will be actually shut off, so makes the movie a little more immersive.

There are other advantages of OLED, but that's the most noticeable difference in my opinion. If you're not someone who cares about such things, (and a lot of people probably don't care or notice) it is not worth the extra money. To my eyes, blacks that are really black is about the most important feature of a TV, and sets up everything else to pop, but in a natural manner.

I'd imagine in 4-5 years, most tvs are OLED or a competing technology with pixels that turn off.

They are... any new TV sold now is either 4k or not worth buying.
