Default Henderson!

Who else is old enough to remember this goal and that series? 50 years today.

I was in Grade 10 in Rutland BC and every classroom had TVs in them. In 1972, Canada ground to halt as this series dominated everything. I remember which class (Social Studies) and even who I was sitting beside!

Bonus points if you saw the Corner Gas episode where they replayed the series on a table top hockey set right down to Eagleson (Wanda) getting hauled away!

Grade 5, science class. Absolutely epic with Henderson scoring the winning goal in each of the final 3 games. You just knew he was going to do it in game 8 after the Soviets declared that they were going to claim victory in the series if the game ended in a tie based on GF. Maybe he doesn’t belong in HoF for one series…debatable but I say he does. He deserves an Order of Canada too. Canada doesn’t elevate many people to hero status but Henderson is #2 for me, behind only Terry Fox.

And Brett sweating buckets. That Corner Gas episode is also epic.

While that was an amazing goal.

A lot of people think he was a nobody till that goal.

That said he scored the game winning goal in the previous 2 games aswell.

That has to be a record!

You score three game winning goals in a series like that, you should be a legend. He is!

Not many know that!

Sorry Ford didnt see your post.

He wasn’t a nobody. He was a solid 2nd line winger, playing on a line with Ullman at centre and Ron Ellis on RW. Ellis was also on the Summit team, and Ullman is in the HoF. And Henderson was considered good enough to be selected for the Summit roster. If entry to the HoF was based on NHL careers only he wouldn’t qualify. But it’s not the NHL HoF, it’s the hockey Hall of Fame. So for me, Henderson qualifies because of the absolutely epic performance he had in that series.

Working on a tugboat listening on a radio. It still had the same effect with no visuals.

I was 10. Watching it at school until lunch time, ran home to watch. Hunkered in front of the portable B/W set, one hand on the channel knob and the other fending off a crying little brother who wanted to watch cartoons.

Then Henderson scored and I went nuts, ran into the kitchen to tell my mom and auntie and they replied "oh, that's nice dear" and went back to their conversation.

And I remember him very well playing with Henderson Keon and Ellis! Keon and Ullman gave them a good 1-2 at center ice. It was the 1st time watched hockey ever when my older brother "bet me" in 1967 and took Montreal. My mom made him pay me;-) So I started watching when the Leafs last won a cup! Was an early Red Wings fan and Gary Bergman was an unsung hero and solid defenseman for Team Canada 72'

Doesn't make me any smarter but sure can compare lots of players over the years. For the record... I still like Orr as even more impactful than Gretzky. Forget the highlight pic goal vs St Louis. The guy revolutionized the entire way the position of defense was viewed and played. He won the frickin scoring title and no other defenseman has ever done that.

Heís one of my top 10, maybe top 5. He has my vote for the smoothest skater Iíve seen in 50 years of watching hockey. He grew up in Provost, making him the closest player at the time to where I grew up, hence an automatic favourite.

CBCís new 4 part Documentary on the Series is excellent.

https://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/spe...t-72-1.6424600

The last episode is next week & the previous 3 are available on CBC Gem.

Quote:
Team Canada has steadily improved, leaving the Soviet national team with the creeping feeling that a Communist triumph is in doubt. Anticipation and dread settle over the preparations for the deciding Game 8.

Canadians back home will stop everything to watch, transfixed.

A refereeing controversy threatens Game 8, but the puck drops on a game for the ages: one of the greatest ever played. Intensity crosses every face, and every jump over the boards is infused with purpose. A blistering affair unfolds, featuring goals, hits and a pace beyond any Stanley Cup Game 7. There's cheating. Emotions boil over. A ruckus in the stands. Communist leaders cast steely gazes.

The tension in the Luzhniki Ice Palace builds as the clock ticks down on a match that will decide not just superiority in hockey but also how these two nations see themselves.

Everyone including players, fans and members of the press feel that whatever the outcome, hockey and Canada will be changed forever.

He may not have made the team if Bobby Hull and Gordie Howe (Bobby Orr couldn’t play either) were on the team.

I was born in 1979 so obviously didn’t watch

Henderson was a LWer so Hull is the guy who would have bumped him. Even if Henderson had still made the team he wouldn’t have had the same role or been on Esposito’s line. Good thing…I’d have not liked seeing a wife beater assume the hero’s role.

Gretzky was saying that it’s a travesty that Henderson isn’t in the Hall of Fame.
