Here's one that always cracked me up...Remember UNG Video on Edmonton Trail?
It began its life as a gun store and had a huge neon sign in front that said "GUN". After the government made it a lot harder to buy guns in this country, the gun shop closed down. The new owners turned it into a video store, and rather than either tearing down the sign, or calling their new store "GUN Video", they rearranged the letters, and UNG Video was born.
I don't know when it was torn down, but it's now just an empty lot on the corner of Edmonton Trail and 12th Ave.
Sadly, Google Images has no results for it, if you search "ung video calgary", you get a lot of photos of Asian people, and one of Olli Jokinen.
I think of that place every single time I drive down Edmonton Trail.
And thanks to those who linked and mentioned the book "Calgary the unknown City" I have had a 15 dollar credit wasting away at chapters.ca for over a year now. Now I have something to spend it on

I remember going down there with my Dad sometime in the early 1990s to get set up. Internet access is something that we generally take for granted these days, but I can't even describe the elation of being able to dial-in from home. At 56K no less!!

I remember being elated when I got my 14.4K modem installed and running.
For anyone who went to Stamps games in the late 80s/early 90s. How about "the Bleacher Creature" Guy painted his whole self red, and banged a drum in one of the low rows of the stadium. Whatever happened to him?
Speaking of people who set the mood and tone at games, I remember there was a trumpet player at Flames games in the mid 80s to early 90s. Dunno what happened to him, but he kinda disappeared sometime in the 90s (if i'm not mistaken).
He was a staple especially in the late 80s and I remember his tunes cutting clear across the dome.
Bump for an old thread...I think the early 1980's 2&7 Hello Calgary videos off youtube hae been brought up here already, but, here's a new, Flames only one.
Clearly highlights looked to be used from one or two exhibition games, maybe before the first season (thus the reason why no name bars for one of the game).

Yeah, was downstairs in the building I worked at as summer student, first got hooked into the internet in the mid 90's.
Something like 10 hours a week was the limit at 28.8k?

Bill Kuhl. In the early 90's he was a substitute band teacher (our class had him on occasion), and he had since stopped. Not sure how we knew it was him, maybe he told us or we figured it out and asked him.
