Best Shawarma or Banh Mi in Calgary
Hi everyone, I'm making a quick stop in Calgary today and I was hoping for some information from the CP collective mind. I have trouble finding a good Shawarma or Banh Mi where I live in the U.S. and I wanted to try either one of them for lunch. I used to go to Banh Mi Thi Thi in downtown, so I already know about that place, but I wanted to know if there are any newer places in the city that are too good to pass up. Any suggestions?

it's really all about Trung Nguyen for banh mi. I'm still partial to Chick Pea on 8th ave for shawarma, but I don't really eat them often.

Jimmy's for Shawarma. There is one in the belt line and one a few blocks from SAIT.

Jimmy's is horrible. That place gets by on reputation only.
Definitely go to Jerusalem Shawarma on 16th Ave and 2nd street NW. It's a must for me every time I'm in town. Also get a side order of hummus. It is exceptional.

I beg to differ. I go to Jerusalem Shawarma, but it's average. No better than the falafel king. Nice people though, and they always give me extra baklava for free.

People love Jimmy's because the food is massive, and the staff have a shtick, but I agree, it's not really good.

For falafel/shawarma I almost always go to Tazza in Bridgeland. I live close to a Jimmy's but I find they're very inconsistant.

Yup exactly. I know the owners quite well and they are great people. Family run business, very outgoing and 'intense' about your sandwich, and best sub in town. I refuse to go anywhere else, as Trung Nguyen is the bar that is set. You can also buy frozen dumplings, won-tons and spring rolls and cook them yourself.

only problem with Trung Nguyen is that it's cash only. Otherwise, it's by far the best sub.
Thi Thi is overrated.

Jimmy's is extremely overrated. Shawarma Palace is my go to. They just opened another place in Airdrie.
Other locations are Falconridge, Forrest Lawn and Montrgomery.

Thanks for the speedy feedback everybody. Our hotel is a couple blocks from Trung Nguyen, so we are just sitting down for lunch here now. Expect my verdict forthwith.

I like the Banh Mi in Forest Lawn, forget the name of the place but it's where the old roller rink used to be.

Having said that, I have never tried Trung Nguyen, so I will have to give that a shot.

I saw this on reddit a couple of days ago. I can't verify their findings but thought the technical analysis was pretty funny.

I really like Pita Basket. Good flavours and usually just the right about of crisp on the pita from the clam grill. Doesn't hurt that it's basically across the street from me.
