Foo was called up because he's a R-Shot/RW, Klimchuk is a L-Shot/LW and clearly wasn't better nor deserved a call up before Mangiapane.

I really hope Klimchuk can make the team to improve the results of the poor 2013 draft. It is going to be tough though with all the new depth and likely only one more chance. His only hope is to have a great camp, play great to start the season in the AHL, and play great once called up.

No matter what, that draft was not poor. Sean Monahan more than makes up for the rest of their other picks shortcomings. And, as an added bonus we just got the guy that was picked ahead of him in that draft.

Capfriendly still lists him as making $80,000 in the AHL.

Pretty odd, qualifying offers expire at 5:00 pm on July 15, 2018. So he would have had, at worst, a qualifying offer of, $875,000 NHL/$70,000 AHL on the table. Instead he reportedly signed a $700,000 NHL/$80,000 AHL contract.

Hardly seems that $10,000 extra guaranteed money makes up for the additional $175,000 he could have made as an NHL player. Even if he was up for for 3 games (~10 of 185 NHL days) he would make more with his qualifying offer.

But accepting a $700,000 NHL contract cascades next year hurting his potential contract as his qualifying offer becomes $735,000 instead of what would have been $918,750.

So either Klimchuk and his agent don't believe he's going to be playing in the NHL really at all, or, what I believe is happening, is the Flames are in such a cap crunch mode right now to sign the RFAs without having to buyout Brouwer that they told Klimchuk that his likelihood of making the team is better if he's making $700,000 over $875,000.

I hadn't penciled him in on the team at all, but seeing this contract, I believe he is now a stronger contender to do so.

And just from a practical standpoint. Klimchuk has an $875,000/$70,000 on the table. If his agent called up Treliving and said Klimchuk would sign a $875,000/$80,000 that hardly seems like something to squabble over if they expected him to stay in the AHL (ultimately giving him $80,000 anyways). Seems like the contract is designed to limit the NHL cap which makes the most sense from both parties if they believe he's actually going to make the NHL with that contract.

Just for giggles, a very quick and dirty illustration of how the $700,000 contract could mean the difference in Klimchuk making the team.

Sign:
Lindholm - $5,000,000
Hanifin - $4,500,000
Jankowski - $1,950,000 (matches Bennett)
Rittich- $850,000
Kulak - $800,000

Gaudreau (6.75)- Monahan (6.375) - Neal (5.75)
Tkachuk (0.925) - Jankowski (1.95) - Lindholm (5)
Bennett (1.95) - Backlund (5.35) - Frolik (4.3)
Mangiapane (0.705)-Ryan (3.125)-Brouwer (4.5)
Czarnik (1.25)

Giordano (6.75)-Brodie (4.65)
Hanafin (4.5)-Hamonic (3.857)
Kulak (0.8)-Stone (3.5)
Prout (0.8)

Smith (4.25)
Rittich (0.85)

Previous buyouts: Bouma, Murphy
Roster size: 22
Total: $78,791,710
Cap-space: $708,290

Just enough space for Klimchuk's $700,000 contract but contracts like Foo's and Lazar's $950,000 don't fit.

Lol if you like, but your reaction shows that you are laughing at what you do not understand.
I actually understand the situation very well. But if you're actually looking at that trade and you get past both Joe and Jarome in hopes that your klimchuk kicker is the straw that breaks the camel's back on the Nilsson trade, then LOL.

I believe the point he is making is that this trade keeps on giving, year after year, not that Klimchuk making the club tips the scales in any manner.

PS *you're

Lindholm is now $150K cheaper than your estimate so it's way closer. If Treliving gets a similar good deal from Hanifin, or bridges him, the numbers add up for all three again.

You're forgetting to factor in Foo's performance bonus, so his cap hit will actually be closer to $1.75M until those bonuses are unattainable. Unless he really flashes in pre-season, IMO, he'll likely be forced to start in the minors.

Fair enough (not my numbers in the estimate).

It really depends what the bonuses are. What was Tkachuk's cap hit in his rookie year over and above his base $925? No way that Foo has anywhere near that kind of year.

Tkachuk had an AAV of $1.775 million.

I'm not sure it works that way. I think they don't count against the cap until they are attained.

Plus, while performance bonuses count against the cap, there's a cushion of 7.5% of the cap for such bonuses. That's $5M.

They actually both have $850k in performance bonuses. They had to entice Foo to sign by offering max bonuses for college players (like all teams were).

I understand that, but the point is that Tkachuk probably earned a whole bunch of them, and they might have given Foo different ones. You can get them for ice time, +/-, etc.

But, looking at the cushion they get, it's not really an issue anyway.

What is a Performance Bonus?
A Performance Bonus can be given to a player in addition to their salary. Performance bonuses are only paid to the player if they meet the requirements as defined by the bonus. Performance bonuses count against the salary cap; however, a team can exceed the salary cap due to performance bonuses by the maximum performance bonus cushion amount of 7.5 percent of the upper limit. Not all players are eligible for Performance Bonuses, and to receive a bonus within their contract, a player must meet one of the following criteria:

This is a welcome update. I hope he's able to challenge at camp. It would be nice to see one of the pieces from the Iggy deal make an impact in the NHL.

Just another reason to keep him in the NHL
