Yeah, that just opens the whole stats debate between eras.

When Gretzky was scoring at will Hockey was a 'Professional Sport' on a technicality.

Without a doubt. The mass expansion really diluted the league. Some defensemen seemed to have just graduated from wearing double runner skates compared to the players in Ovechkin's time in the league. That is before you bring in the goalie equipment.

For me without a doubt he will be the GOAT for goal scoring when all is said and done. I just hope he gets to 895 so there is no argument, because you know there will be one from up north.

Uh, it's hard until you notice that Gretzky has almost four times as many assists and will finish with roughly double Ovi's career point total regardless of whether he threatens 892.

Are we seriously arguing GOAT here? Not going to get many takers on that one.

I'm going to assume that he meant GOAT goal scorer, who the hell has talked about assists in here?

I thought about clarifying goal scoring GOAT, but figured this thread is dedicated to Ovechkin's goal totals so that wasn't needed. Guess I was wrong

I think it's safe to assume some posters here like to be difficult for the sake of being difficult.

A third period, natural hatrick, in just over 4 minutes.

Crazy! Haha

He's amazing. I honestly don't even think 1000 is out of the question unless he bolts after he breaks the record. With how durable he is and how well he's managed to adapt to the aging curve, I think 895 is a given.

I think he had to average something like 33 goals a season until he was 40 to break the record. He's already blown past it this year, everything else is just gravy and making it more and more achievable. Guy could put up a 60 goal season at 34 years old. That's crazy.

895 is still crazy but may be done, but I would say 1,000 isn't realistic at all. That's 302 away, which means he has have an average of 50 goals per season if he played till he was 40.

Nothing is a given and that’s what makes this so special. He’s still 196 back. That’s a lot of goals even for the Great 8. Many things will need to go right for him to even have a chance.
