Irrespective of the winner, we will be having a first time ODI World Cup Champion. England have been in and lost 3 finals (1979,1987 and 1992). New Zealand have lost their only final appearance (2015).

Oh no New Zealand got screwed on that LBW and couldn’t review due to a really dumb early review.

England win on the virtue of hitting more boundaries in the super over than NZ. Such a heartbreaking way to lose for the Kiwis.
Greatest world cup final match in history.

Damn there is no way NZ “lost” this game. Should be a shared trophy. Great world cup final though!

That's a horrible rule given the magnitude of what it is deciding.
Like going to penalties in soccer and if tied after five each the team with the most corners wins it.
Just keep playing until there is a clear winner.
Not a fan but watched the last few overs and it was exciting! Never ever seen a fluke like that dive and the ball coming off the bat for four.
That and the Kiwi stepping back onto the boundary for six will haunt them.

I'm with you. Emotionally spent. Can't imagine how the boys are feeling but they should be proud of what they've achieved, not to mention being a part of the greatest game of cricket I've ever seen.

Kane Williamson named player of the tournament. I'm glad the world got to see what we in NZ already knew: a calm, steady, immensely skilled leader who always backs his team. He brought this side to new heights despite all its weaknesses. They played as a team much greater than the sum of their parts and the captain deserves all the praise for that.
On to the game (sigh):
What a stupid way to break a tie. I'm having some real 2004 flashbacks today. Imagine if the flames and lightning were tied after one overtime in game 7 and they awarded the cup to Tampa because they scored more goals over the series. Deciding on boundaries just seems so arbitrary. If you have to use something, why not wickers lost? Runs are runs no matter how you score them.
The sheer luck of England, just unbelievable. That overthrow 6 might be the most flukey thing I've ever seen in any sport ever. That it happened in the final over of the world cup is just so heartbreaking. And Stokes being caught on the boundary only to have Boult step on the rope (Guppy was right there, if he had unloaded just a split second earlier...) that was game over. No way England were getting 20+ runs off the last over with no recognised batsmen at the crease.
A couple of poor umpiring decisions, first with Taylor being called out when he wasn't, they Roy not being called out when he was. You could just see the frustration in the first over when Roy should have been gone but wasn't. Thankfully he didn't go on to make a big score but in a game this tight every run counts and his 17 still contributed.
Anyways, I feel so gutted about this loss. It stings. NZ cricket fans everywhere must feel a little hard done by. I imagine a lot of people aren't showing up at work today. It is now Monday morning in NZ and the game was on all night there. Proud of the effort and obviously wish the outcome was different. But gutted, so gutted.
Good job blackcaps, you showed the world some damn good cricket. Look forward to the next home summer now.

What the hell is a boundary countback? Just keep playing super overs. I thought the shootout was a stupid way to end hockey games and cricket says hold my beer.
Great effort by New Zealand. They got no luck from the umpires or bounces. Screw you England I hope you get swept in the Ashes.

I'm still salty. Of course England wins the world cup without winning.
Poor New Zealand. They win if those LBW calls go their way, or the rope isn't stepped on, or that ball doesn't bounce off the bat, or if the bounce off the bat doesn't leave the field, or if the last throw is slightly off line, or if the tie breaker is wickets instead of boundaries.

And they call us English "whinging"
Honestly they should have just used the same rule here as for an abandoned final - share the cup.

Now some experts are saying the "Bat of God" incident should have counted for 5 runs and not 6...
https://www.huffingtonpost.in/entry/...b0bd7d1e1f55c6
Kill me now. Nah but joking aside, England are the first team on ODI history to be bowled out in a run chase and still "win" the game.

Plus the run in progress if the batsmen have crossed at the instance of the throw.

Not sure what that means especially as the one before is:
Quote:
Plus all runs completed before the throw.
|
Have crossed what?
Edit. Actually I suppose the determining factor is if they crossed each other before the ball was thrown
Double edit after watching on YouTube. They clearly hadn't. Oh crap! Kiwis got stiffed!
