If Kylington’s agent thought he could pressure Conroy into a bad contract, he obviously wasn't paying attention to what Conroy's been saying since he took over and his dealing with players like Zadorov. If Kylington plays well in Colorado, fine, but his contribution to the Flames over the last two years was nothing and his time here became nothing but a distraction. It was time to move on from him.

If he had a broken leg and sat out for 2 years I think there would still be an expectation of taking a show me deal rather than expecting a multi year deal.
And it's not entirely the same since it is a lot more subjective. There is far more nuance with a mental health issue than most physical injuries.
From the Flames perspective it would make sense that they are taking on a lot more risk with him either not being able to get back to speed after all the time off or him needing additional time off again for similar reasons. If a player was coming off a major physical injury teams would likely hedge against both of these things.
If the Washington deal really was out there and then fell apart because of Chychrun its interesting that the talks between Calgary and Kylington closed so quickly since that trade happened on July 1st I believe. Maybe the Flames didn't see losing Kylington as that big of a loss.

I think they pivoted quickly to Bean and once that was done, they weren't as interested in Kylington.

You're absolutely right, but I think both parties need to acknowledge that. Kylington cant expect a team to take a huge risk on him, and he shouldnt be asking them to. Dip a toe into that water first.
Because with a conventional injury, the healing time and process and fallout are more well documented and that risk can be mitigated and accounted for somewhat.
Mental Health? Thats a crap-shoot. That is a roll of the dice. Both sides have to be cognizant of that.
And who knows, maybe a change of scenery is all it is. I'm no Mental Health expert, some people like to be somewhere comfortable and familiar and some people need to get away from 'the scene of the incident.'
Who knows which he is?

Agreed.
Much. Less. Risk.

If Pinder's speculation is accurate and Flames offered in the neighborhood of 1 year, $3 million then that was a very fair offer.
Lesson here is that it doesn't always pay to hold out for the very best deal. If a fair offer is on the table, it's often best to take it before it disappears.

I interpreted it as $3mm over 2 years ($1.5mm per). I think he said Kylington left another $2mm on the table and a multi year deal. I could be remembering wrong. Lines up with Jake Bean's $1.75mm x 2 years.

I interpreted it as 1 year, between $2-3 million. It also lines up with what Boomer said he heard back in June when he said the Flames offered a 1 year deal with a similar but even higher AAV as his previous contract.

And a player who wants to play in Calgary above anywhere else. In his post signing presser, he said he always wanted to be in Calgary and was glad the timing finally worked out. He is also going in with his eyes wide open and knows where the team is at the moment.
It feels like once Kylington decided to play hardball with the Flames, it gave them a clean exit without having to feel like they were obligated to take care of him anymore. It showed he was healthy enough to move on to a new hockey family.

I'm still completely baffled as to how in thw world Kylington and/or his camp thought he would be offered a multi year deal anywhere after sitting out for almost the entirety of his last multi year deal.
Just a ridiculous notion. Nobody was going to take that risk with him.

Oh wow, if Kylington turned down 2-3 million to be here then I guess he didn't want to be here.

According to the rumours floating around, both Calgary and Washington were going to take that risk with him.
Both dried up, #### happens.

This has to be beyond frustrating to the Flames.
I’m both cases, Gaudreau and Kylington, the players pulled the rug out from under their feet. Will be interesting to see how the engage players moving forward and if this results in a more ‘cut-throat’ position.

Johnny and his agent presented the team with a contract, they said yes. Last minute possible Johnny calls and says just kidding I am going to free agency.
You could see the anger on Trelivings face when he did the press conference.
Don't think the situations are similar at all.

Personally I like Bean's game better than Kylington's so I am fine with the way it all worked out. Nothing against OK, I hope he can continue on with his career but him leaving really is a nothing burger.

I think they’re quite similar in the sense that in both cases the players indicated, strongly, they were coming back.
The team, as I’m sure they would see it, operated in good faith. Not so sure either Gaudreau and Kylington can confidently say the same.

I don't think Gaudreau operated in good faith, I have said it all along he knew what he was going to do. He just took the team for a ride.
I don't know about Oliver, but he said he wanted to come back but that Washington offer if true makes sense for someone to go after that.
Oliver situation to me seems simple. He got bad information, Flames moved on and signed a better player, and he got this deal.

Based on what? Why would he? If he had signed for more or as much as the Flames were offering with the Flyers or a cup contender your position might make sense but that’s not what happened.
I think Gaudreau wanted to resign but due to a boarder, a pandemic, and a growing family he made a very difficult decision.
Here’s an article from Wes Gilbertson on Kylington a few months ago that in retrospect is pretty damming for Kylington’s side.

It's what I feel he did. He had no attachment to Calgary. The letter his agent wrote to the fans said one day he will come back to visit Banff.
Term and money play a role I guess, once they started negotiating and he didn't like what was being offered he left.

I haven't seen much of Bean so I'll have to reserve judgement. The tricky part with Kylington is whether or not his absence contributed to rust, or is it possible he will get back to the player that had a solid run with Tanev. Most people agree that Tanev really covered the warts in his game, but its hard to say which Oliver Colorado will get.
