Didn’t see a thread. Some talk in the USA thread though

Edit: 27 passengers were from Edmonton.

Horrible news, definitely needed its own thread. RIP to all who were on that flight.

Ukraine made a statement attributing the crash to engine failure, then deleted the statement

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/w...rce=reddit.com

Coupled with how quick Iran was to point to technical malfunctions, something smells dirty

Apparently 1% of Edmonton’s Iranian population is wiped out.

I heard that on the radio. Kind of a weird way to report it.

167 total passengers, 63 Canadian.. that's utterly shocking.

Yeah 20 Iranians from Edmonton which = 1% of the Iranian population in Edmonton. It's not news unless we can find a way to sensationalize it!

Either a tragic coincidence or a tragic act either way its sad.

This is just brutal, I have so many Iranian colleagues. Someone on my team just got back from Tehran on Saturday with her kids. Makes me sick to even think of it.

This crash killed 37 more Canadians than the 9/11 attacks did. It is absolutely sensational.

What a terrible day yesterday. I can't believe that almost half the flight were Canadians.

Really hope Iran gives an honest account of what happened. It seems very likely they accidentally brought the plane down.

Did I use it incorrectly? I feel like I did now, I'm not down playing the event itself just the specific reporting of the 1%.

Where do you get that? It was going to Kyiv. This plane regularily did Tehran-Kyiv-Paris/Milan(or other major euro airport)-Kyiv-Tehran

No, it was heading to Kyiv but there is a flight from Kyiv to Toronto that has been reported as being one of the most affordable ways to get from Iran to Canada. Could be why so many Canadians were on this flight.

In May when I was returning from Ukraine I was on that Kyiv to Toronto flight. Probably 95% of it was Iranians. I asked the guy next to me why there were so many of his countrymen and he confirmed it's the main connection route to get to Tehran from Canada.

I was kind of surprised, with all of the US surveillance in the area from Drones to satellites that they've been relatively tight lipped on this. Outside of the information on the black boxes and voice recorders from the plane, its likely that the answer to what happened could come from the Americans.
