Default 16 hours in Newark, NJ...What to Do...

As stated above...

My wife and son have a 16 hour layover in Newark, NJ this July on their return trip from Iceland.

What would be the bets way to spend the time...

I can't recommend anything because I didn't venture out on my layover there, but man that airport blows. The restaurants there are damn expensive for what you're getting as well.

Train to Penn Station in Manhattan and then do one (or more) of the millions of things there are to do in NYC.

Get a pizza - apparently they are unreal in Newark. My son flew in there a few years ago for work and said they were amazing.

Sixteen hours is plenty of time to go into Manhattan and do something. I don't know what there is in Newark, as I only went to the airport, but there is anything you could want in Manhattan. It might depend on your airline, but when I flew out of Newark (Air Canada) the section of the airport where I was had one restaurant, one "convenience store", and a small number of basic seats. Not the kind of place you'd want to spend much time.

The real question is how much do you value your time (or your wife and kids time) to book this kind of layover? 16 hours? I better be saving $500 a person.

Well, it really depends what time they arrive at Newark and deplane. Everything might be closed or nearly closed, and they get to enjoy 16 hours of waiting around.

I thought about those flights from Iceland returning through Montreal for 20+ hour layovers, but that’s really a long time to wait around and it’s not like during all that time you can do something. A 16 hour layover staring at 6pm is pretty much a “get dinner and a hotel room” kind of scenario.

Assuming the bulk of those 16 hours is during day light hours head to Manhattan. I once spent 2+ hours at Newark at 5:00am one morning, would not recommend.

I'd be inclined to take the train to Penn Station, hop on the subway and check out south Manhattan, take the roundtrip Staten Island ferry ride (great views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty) then walk around the 9/11 memorial & battery park areas. Check out Wall Street/Charging bull, lots of landmark density in that area.

Or alternatively, walk north from Penn Station through Times Square and into Central Park, grab a hot dog (Papaya King!) in the upper east side.

Either way, I'd probably spring for a cab on the way back, assuming you've got a family that spent 5+ hours on a flight from Iceland and put some serious mileage on their feet that day.
