Massive overpayment. 1 year too long 2x money. Clearly a bidding war broke out.
He was ok in the Olympics. Not dominant by any means if you watched the games.
Nigel Dawes has out goal scored him this year in the KHL and was within 6 points overall. Toss in his hot and cold attitude about hockey and its not going to turn out great for the Kings.

and... this is a 35+ contract, is it not?
That complicates things for the Kings as well.

If I could have Kovy on the Flames for that exact contract, I would easily decline.
3 years is a big risk, imo.

Just a few minor things. like nobody wants to play in Calgary anymore. And we seem to be missing opportunities for trades.

You either hate or love California. High taxes, endless traffic jams, expensive real estate but it has great weather, wonderful attractions, and beautiful scenery.
At the end of the day, it's a free asset that only costs $$$. It's well worth the risk for an established sniper even if he turns out slower than a turtle.

I thought you weren't allowed to discuss specific terms with a UFA before July 1? Or are they allowed to since he didn't play with another NHL team last year?

We don't know that. The Flames had every opportunity to pick up Kane but the Flames would rather have "character" players. Whatever that means.

When it comes to the Flames, the general consensus is that you can't build teams by spending huge dollars on aging players in free agency.
When other teams do it: the rich get richer... so jelly... hate that players don't want to come here.
Personally, I am glad that the Flames are not the ones paying him $18.75M over the next 3 years, on a 35+ contract that they can't get out of.

I'm obviously in the minority here... I don't think there's anything wrong with that contract. I wish he'd have signed here for that.
I expect he'll average 25-30 goals over those 3 years.

What the hell are you talking about...Kane was traded for picks the Flames didn't have. Also he has been given a terrible contract, like this one.
Kings aren't even a good team...they are old, slow, and capped out
Mediocre at best

160 goals for Dawes and 120 for Kovalchuk over last 5 seasons in the KHL.
262 games Kovalchuk 274 for Dawes.
260 points for Dawes vs 289 for Kovalchuk.
In those 5 years, the team Kovalchuk played for won the KHL championship twice, lost in the final another year.
Dawes team won 2 playoff rounds total and were out of the playoffs twice.
So stats are a pretty good trend, Kovalchuk clearly on a better team. Dawes 2 years younger too.
If someone today offered Nigel Dawes 3 years at 5.90m as a contract which reflects the relative stats vs Kovalchuk over the past 5 seasons, they would be called the worst GM in history.

What 35-38 year old in the NHL averages 25-30 goals these days?

It's not at all comparable though. Kovalchuk has shown that he is an elite scorer at the NHL level, while Dawes has shown to be no more than an AHL/NHL tweener. It's irrelevant how similar their stats are in a lesser league.
Roman Cervenka and Artemi Panarin put up nearly identical stats in 2013/14 while both playing for St. Petersburg SKA, and much like Kovalchuk and Dawes, Panarin has shown to be an elite player in the NHL while Cervenka didn't appear to be anything more than a tweener.
