He played every game and averaged about 17 minutes a game for the Stanley Cup winning team while leading the team with a +17 in the playoffs. It's only for one season so he should be at the very least serviceable for them. Not sure why they would buy him out as their blue line isn't exactly deep. I suppose they could trade him in a scenario they take on some salary.

I think Orpik is better to hold then buy out, but it doesn't really change much

He's almost 38, is slowing down ever more and is close to being completely left behind by the pace of the NHL game.
He's gonna struggle more and more just to play any sort of passable positional defense in the NHL like he used to be able to, nevermind hit people like does.
He looks like someone who's on the last of his last legs. Running on fumes. He could turn into Niklas Grossmann real soon.

Good deal for the Avs. I wished the Flames with have went after Grubauer around the expansion draft and even now would have liked to add him to the roster. With Smith I see why they wouldn't. Also interesting to see how he does on a lesser team than Washington. Nice pickup for a 26 year old goalie with some decent upside. If he flourishes I'll be upset.

The guy just played 105 games this season and you are making him sound like he should be using a walker or something. He's not Grossmann because Grossmann can't play. Nobody is saying he's a lynchpin going forward for anyone but based on this season he should have another season of being able to play solid bottom pairing for a few teams.

Orpik is close to being unplayable right now because he's lost almost all his below average footspeed that he used to have.

orpik in the playoffs
avg 17 min of TOI
was +17 (team high) with virtually zero time on the pp
had 88 hits (2nd most)
had 78 min of Short Handed TOI (team high)
had 50 blocked shots (2nd most)
the guy still seems to have something left in the tank from the numbers, especially in the playoffs...

Good numbers for sure, but he could easily lose one more step as of this upcoming year and that could be curtains for his NHL life.

Brooks Orpik broke Erik Cole's neck with a dirty hit and never changed the way he played. He's notorious for not fighting, and too often never answered the bell for his awful hits. He's this generation's Marchment.
#### that guy.

Orpik is still a serviceable player. Colorado shouldn't buy him out.

Don't like Orpik in the west, but he's slowed down considerably so not the menace he used to be.
