Of course he tried, he is in on everything. It just did not work out, thus why he went with other goalies instead.

Look at Holtby. He’s the same age as Markstrom and a bit older than Lehner (and obviously younger than Talbot).
3 years ago, he won a Vezina. 2 years ago, he won the Stanley Cup.
This year? He’s a UFA who Washington likely won’t sign, and is not going to be anybody’s first choice of what’s available.
You never know when a goalie is going to appear, and when they’re going to vanish.

Last night I was screaming for this team to get a new goaltender. But after giving it 24 hours of thought, my mind has changed somewhat. Talbot played well enough this series to get another kick at the can. 1 more year of Talbot/Rittich and then make a change if it doesn't work out.
This playoff series was lost due to lack of production from our top line, lacklustre 5 on 5 play, and poor coaching decisions. I would certainly like to see a proven NHL coach behind the bench next year, such as Gallant or Torts.

There will be great goaltenders available this off-season, ie. Robin Lehner, Jacob Markstrom, and a few others not named Talbot.
Sign one of them.

The cost of a UFA goalie makes me extremely leery of adding one this off-season. Especially with how mercurial all goalies appear to be.
This is honestly the most baffling area to be addressed this off-season. It won't surprise me a bit to see Rittich in the Vezina conversation next year, and not because I have been so impressed by his body of work. Moreso because, well ... goalies... ?

Look, there are no easy answers here, but I'm on board to trade for a really good young goalie stuck on the depth chart in another organization. If that doesn't work out, I bring back Talbot on a 1 or 2 year deal. Then, I pray to god that one of Parsons or Wolf catches fire in their development and forces their way onto the roster in a year or two.
Other than that, you could always trade for Bobrovsky!!!

This organization has had hot goalie prospect after hot goalie prospect. It's not for a lack of trying, I actually think they have done a really good job of drafting the position plus showing a knack of identifying quality European guys.
None of them have panned out, don't know if it's coaching or what.

Every cup winning goalie since the lockout has been homegrown with a max cap hit of $6M (maybe 6.1?).
Osgood is sort of an exception...home grown in DET but 3 years on the Island and STL before returning after the lockout.
In a crapshoot tourney I understand going with Talbot, but it kinda sucks that Rittich hasn’t seen any meaningful playoff action.

Goalie A - 0.924 save percentage, GAA 2.42
Goalie B - 0.906 save percentage, GAA 2.49
Goalie C - 0.851 save percentage, GAA 4.72
Goalie D - 0.904 save percentage, GAA 2.44
Pick one from this years playoffs.
Maybe we need to focus on the product in front of the goalie. We had decent goaltending this playoffs. People are gonna be sour after game 6 but Talbot played well.

Make Lehner an offer he can't refuse and go with him and BSD for next year at least. Cut Talbot loose. I like this plan.

It’s very easy to overpay for goaltending and be hamstrung though. I think Lehner is looking for term and hasn’t found it last few years. We might be able to squeeze a better salary.

I wish we got Korpisalo when there was a chance. Man what a bummer.

One of the NHL analysts was talking about the UFA goalies last week and his thoughts were that goalies might have to drop their asking price this off season if they want to get signed. His expectation was that the salary cap was really going to hurt the UFA goalies.

If the Flames can get Lehner they should cut ties with BSD and have a cheaper backup.

Yup, I stand corrected. That is an even better plan. Probably can't afford 2.75 mil on a back up especially if Lehner gets what he's worth.

I'd let the goalie carousel spin until every other spot is filled and the music stops. There will be somebody decent left. Maybe it's Talbot, maybe not. Platoon with Rittich, cross your fingers, and hope for the best.
Hope is never a good plan...unless you're the Flames (it's the only plan).

I'm OK with Rittich and Gillies and Zagadulin. Rittich is still learning to be starting goalie, so he will be better. Main problem is we need to learn to win with average goalie.

I think Talbot might be the one to sign-he won't cost too much, and seems like he's got plenty of hockey left. In games he started this year, the team in front of him seemed calmer and more confident. He's a little older, but many goalies seem to play longer.
Rittich is the one I'm worried about. He seems to have a few glaring weaknesses that teams are on to (such as high glove side). Could be Sigalet's influence too, but when he struggles, he looks weak.
