Default Do the Flames Keep Treliving?

The development of defensive prospects has improved under Treliving. Same goes for forwards. His RFA extensions have been pretty strong if you include Lindholm. Some UFA signings, including Ryan, Frolik, Johnson, Engelland, have been fine. Drafting has been good since 2015. He has had "near misses" on what could have been great trades.

However, Treliving has:
-Wasted many considerable assets acquiring sub-par goalies (2nd round pick on Mason McDonald, 2nd round pick on Parsons, Jones for Backstrom, 2nd and 3rd round picks for Elliott, 3rd round pick and two players for Smith, prospect and a pick for Lack, contracts given to Hiller and Talbot)
-Hired poor coaches when elite coaches were available
-Failed to acquire an elite number 1 center
-Failed to get the Flames past the first round, except in 2015 with what was largely Feaster and Sutter's team
-Signed Mason Raymond, Troy Brouwer, Michael Stone (after acquired), and James Neal as free agents
-Even the Gaudreau and Monahan contracts are worse than the contracts that were handed out to their peers at the same time (see Kucherov, Forsberg, Scheifele, MacKinnon). The Tkachuk contract lacks term, will require 9 mill qualifying offer
-Wasted assets on guys like Forbert, Fantenberg, Shore, Lack, and Hamoni

I think most fans agree that the team needs to make changes.
However, should Treliving be the one making these changes?

I'm done with him. Don't let him rehire GG as his big move this offseason. Garbage team, garbage coaches, garbage GM, garbage ownership

I think if we get a new coach, we also get a new GM and let that GM choose the coach

I wish you could demote him to AGM and let him handle RFA negotiations

He is an awful talent evaluator and his job is now on the line, don’t let him make any long term changes to this team

If you actually look at his moves about 80 percent are bad and some are really really bad like Neal, Gulutzan, Hamonic, Lazar

Get rid of him and give Conroy a shot. He has been groomed for almost a decade now so he should be ready.

Last thing this franchise needs is a fresh face GM making rookie mistakes on the job.

I’m a Tre fan, think he’s probably learned from a lot of his mistakes. But if you’re going to replace him, you need an experienced hand at the wheel in my opinion.

When you add up all the moves he's made, the picks and prospects he's given up for nothing, the head-scratching roster and coaching decisions... it paints a pretty bleak picture. His tenure has not been good.

I don't think he's the guy you put in charge during a rebuild. But, I don't think the owners are going to sign off on a rebuild anyway so we'd better just get used to more of this crap.

The best GMs in hockey right now could be Sakic and Yzerman who were groomed and given a chance. I would much rather give Conroy a chance instead of bringing in a boring face like Burke and Nonis from the old boys club.

They shouldn’t. And I say this as someone who has been one of his biggest defenders. But I think it’s time to admit that it’s not working. Bring in a fresh face and start over. Stock up on picks, make Chucky the captain, and see what you can do in 4 or 5 years.

Whatever plan he has executed against is a mystery to me.

Results speak for themselves. Problems everywhere.

How many GMs get 5 coaches with no playoff success?

I'd be totally on board to give this a try, but I fear Conroy might not have the stomach to tell guys what they don't want to hear.

Treliving history:

2014–15 - 2nd round loss (1-4)
2015–16 - no playoffs
2016–17 - 1st round loss (sweep)
2017–18 - no playoffs
2018–19 - 1st round loss (1-4)
2019–20 - 1st round loss (2-4)

How is this even a question?

He's made several mistakes, the worst IMO are, in order:

1. Never hiring a good coach
2. Missing out on ROR (which led to the Neal signing)
3. Trading for Hamonic (same draft Schenn was also traded for similar return)
4. ####ing goalie carousel (this one is on his bosses too for messing up the Bishop acquisition)

First time I’ve ever seen the David Jones for Backstrom listed as a bad trade.

That was the most ‘who cares’ trade ever.

Didn’t we essentially just get a 6th round pick to give up a plug and take on a UFA goalie to be?

Good teams usually have a good goalie a #1 center and a good coach.

You would think that Tre would have gotten at least one of those three things by accident. But he didn't have any of the three. Ever.

This could also be a money/ownership issue as well. I just don't see why we always spring for cheap mediocre coaches otherwise.

Yeah and drafted Phillips with that pick
