This I have no idea.
Because of how strong the Rangers goaltending was coming on, combined with Panarin and Zibinijad and Carolina’s suspect goaltending, I say Rangers in 4

Rangers in 3. Canes left wondering why they gave up Lafrenier for Brady freaking Skjei.

Is their first not lottery protected?

In a roundabout way it is.
The Rangers get the lower of the two first-round picks that Carolina currently owns. They got Toronto's first in the Marleau trade, but if it ends up being a top-10 pick, Toronto will keep it.
At this point, the only way Toronto's pick could be top-10 would be if they lose to Columbus and win the lottery for the first overall pick. In that case, Carolina's pick wouldn't be first overall and it would go to the Rangers.
If Carolina were to lose to the Rangers and win the lottery, they would get the first overall pick because Toronto's pick wouldn't be top-10 and it would be lower than Carolina's, so the Rangers would get Toronto's first rounder.

I have no clue how these teams match up, but this is my happy-place series, because I support both teams enough to be invested, but not enough to feel bad when one eventually has to lose

Feel like this should be an easy series for the Rangers to take. So that said it'll go the distance.

I have had a soft spot for the Hurricanes since 2006 so I will support them against almost every other team in the east except Boston whose heroics in 2011 were slightly more meaningful for me

Canes in 4. I think the Canes are going to continue making progress after their playoff success last year.

Dougie Hamilton is out for game 1. Left practice last week and still not ready to go. So that is a significant guy missing from the lineup. Countered by Shesterkin being unfit and Lundquist starting for the Rangers.

Yeah King Henrik starting is a bit of a surprise.

He deserves the start. He was also 3-0 against Carolina this year.

I think this is going to be one of the better play-in match-ups. Canes in 5.
