Given its contents, I automatically assumed it had been summoned to Edmonton (specifically, Rogers Place).

I wouldn't call Monahan awful defensively. In fact he put a lot of work into being a better 2-way forward last summer that showed this last season. His issues are more that he doesn't drive the play and is that rare complementary 1st line center.

That is because he has to play all the defense for him and Gaudreau, get the puck to Johnny at center, race down the ice only for Gaudreau to turn it over and then race back to the defensive end.

And it's not like it's goaltending that craters the Oilers forwards in GA/60, the story is the same on expected goals against per 60 at 5v5.
100 players listed as a C played more than 800 minutes at 5v5 last year.
McDavid: 2.78 xGA per 60 ranks 4th
Draisaitl: 2.66 xGA per 60 ranks 8th
They just aren't good defensively.
