Stone has been unreal in his role.
Use his rough first half to lower his cap hit but sign him asap please

Can't sign him before the expansion draft unless BT makes some sort of side deal with GMGM to get him to take a specific player and leave Stone be. Flames three D protection spots are already filled.

Can't imagine there's much risk in waiting to negotiate with Stone until after the expansion draft.
Worst case he's had a great playoff run and the Flames are even more confident in his top-4 role on this team.
Realistically, he's come to the Flames and done literally nothing but win. He's familiar with Calgary, his wife is from here, they have twins, and just bought a home here. Sounds like a slam dunk to sign him.

Yeah, I can't stand that guy.
I have read Chris Taberi's hilariously terrible piece about Stone, but cannot find a link to the Ari Yanover article you mentioned. Can someone find it for me?

The Flames are probably happy with Michael Stone’s play thus far, so let’s assume he’ll be back. His current cap hit is $2 million, thanks to the Arizona Coyotes retaining half of it. The ideal spot for him is probably as a bottom pairing guy, so they probably won’t want him at $4 million again; let’s give him Engelland money at $2.9 million.
|
$2.9M isn't realistic either.

Well... in her defense magically paying Shattenkirk to be our #4 and having Stone as a bottom pairing guy making 2.9 Million would probably make for a statistically stacked d-core.

I think playing on a garbage team like Arizona would have a big negative effect on advanced stats.

*EDIT* She is from Flamesnation. That explains a lot.

It was the Stone comment that got me wondering. Fan960's credibility really takes a hit when they let someone like that get any air time.

I think with term (4-5 years) it will be $4 million cap hit at the most.
He got $4 million last off season in a one year deal after putting up 36 points, and was a week away from arbitration.
Personally I'd love to see a 4 year $14 million contract signed not long after FA opens up. Maybe even with a limited NTC. As per usual with the Flames though, no NMC whatsoever.

I can't see more than $4m even after a good last half.
I think Tree will somehow get somewhere around 3yr/$10m.

I like what the addition of Stone has done to that pairing.
I notice Brodie is more willing to join the rush, including a recent non-OT breakaway attempt; and every time Stone shoots from the point it hits the goalie or goes in more frequently. Before, when Wideman shot, I'd go into a panicked "where's Brodie? Is he in position to cover the returning 2-on-1?" mindset.
It's a night and day difference.

Stone makes the top 4 as solid a group as there is in the league. May end up paying him not just for his individual accomplishments, but the fact he's a perfect fit with Brodie, which he is. Just think about the kind of start the team could have next year without having to mess around pairings on the top 4 again.
A little lost in this is 5+6. I'd like to see Engelland and Bartkowski back as the bottom pair as they've been a great fit as well. Think it's fair to say Bartkowski has way exceeded expectations. What does it take to keep Engelland around? Is anyone on the open market going to pay him more than 2 mln AAV over 3 years?

See, this is what is completely absent from Flamesnation's sabre-metrics voodoo: Stone is big and skates well. Wideman is smaller, and much, MUCH slower. Those two factors alone make him emminently more qualified to play with Brodie on that second pairing. I am sure it is a big reason why Brodie seems so much more comfortable now than he did in the first four months of the season.

I might be getting ahead of myself but are we happy with Stone for another 3 or 4 years?
Would be regulating any of our prospects to the bottom pair.

Yeah, I'm afraid you are getting ahead of yourself.
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Don't count your chickens....yada yada. If the Flames actually develop Dmen internally that end up being a better option than Stone 2-3 years from now, then that's a great problem to have.

Stone isn't getting a dime less then the four million he's making now. 4.5/5 would be a good addition to our team.

4.5/5 seems a little steep to me
Yes he solidified the top four...look at who he replaced though
any competent NHL d-man would have been a major upgrade
