I think that comes into play just before he goes UFA next July. If he gets traded before then then that team becomes his "current team" and he can sign for 8 yrs.

They may have to wait until the trade deadline or at least January 1st to sign the extension for 8 years but yes you are correct. His next team can sign him for 8 years at some point.

If I were the team or player I'd be worried about doing a sign and trade because maybe the team doesn't get the trade done due to last second change of heart on the specifics of the trade. Let the new team worry about signing new contract extensions, why do their work for them?

My guess is there's similar hang-ups as the Duchene trade. Probably both Ottawa and Tampa looking to dump salary on a 3rd party.

Won't the new contract be similar to Stamkos in terms of the AAV being lower than most expect due to tax benefit of FLA?

Obviously it's still an issue to manage but I'm expecting a lower AAV than Doughty.

I'd be leary of that if I am a player. Could always get traded where taxes are super high.

Plus TBL should be selling him on keep more money in your pocket, not get the same money at a lower cap hit.

Don't see why a free agent who's never played in Tampa is going to give a discount to them because they have lower taxes.

Because are the end of the day he'd take home more cold hard cash with a less tax rate. That's more important except of course if he gets traded to Quebec later onwards. Expect a full NMC if they do offer less.

Question - is a full NMC exempt from a buyout?

No, the CBA specifies that a player can only sign an 8-year extension with his current team if he has continually been a member of that team since the most-recent trade deadline. That means Ottawa is the only team he can sign an 8-year extension with until after next year's trade deadline.

I'm sure the NHL can help. They're good at doing that with good teams

Tampa would be just terrifying if this comes to fruition.

Gonna be hard for our Flames to beat them in the playoffs this year, but I think our boys can do it

Stuff like that could be beneficial to both the player and the acquiring team, no?
If he wants to win on top of making $70M+, he'd probably rather those trade pieces remain on the team he's going to.
