Default No more smoking or re entry at the Saddledome

I just got this email from the flames regarding smoking and re entry.

The Scotiabank Saddledome is committed to providing our guests the safest and most secure environment and we are consistently reviewing our policies and processes to that end. In keeping with our commitment to safety and security, and as a result of a thorough review of best practices in the arena industry, effective July 1, 2018, exiting and re-entering the building during events (sporting and non-sporting) will not be permitted at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

In alignment with the Scotiabank Saddledome no re-entry policy, the facility will be smoke-free within and around all areas of the building, for all events once the doors of the building are open to the general public. Smoking is strictly prohibited in all areas, including suites and restaurants within the facility, as well as within 10 meters of any external entry door.

Thank you in advance for your co-operation.

It was likely one of the last buildings around that still allowed a "smoking section" outside no?

During the STH session, I think they had mentioned they were the last NHL arena that still allowed re-entry and they were doing away with that this year.

NHL had been pressuring them for years to not allow re-entry.

Yeah, they spoke about this at the season ticket holder events. They had mentioned the Saddledome was one of the last arenas in North America to allow re-entry.

Not going to lie, i’ve used those sections recently, but this makes sense. In fact, it never made sense having smoking sections so close to the doors and having smokers be able to enter and exit the building whenever.

This is a good move.

I think it’s silly. If you don’t like smoking, that’s fine. But it is still a legal activity. Nothing worse than going to a 3 hours concert with two opening acts with forever between sets and being stuck inside.
Honestly, you go through security to get in, and again when you come back from the smoke pit. I fail to see why it’s such a safety threat to provided an area for some smokers.

Your right putting this all in the name of safety is BS. My guess is they are equally as concerned about ticket scamming.

I feel bad for smokers I honestly do. Whether you like smoking or not, it is evident that smokers are increasingly being marginalized.

Cuts the needed security budget thus being cheaper to run. Don't need that many extra on shift now that the doors are shut.

Meh, I smoke. And when I drink beer I really want to smoke.

Just surprising they couldn't just wall off a smoking section and not have and extra security on the doors. Like properly walled off, not rent a fences people can climb over or sneak contraband in.

Also, I've been surprised at the sheer number of smokers in Calgary as opposed to anywhere in BC. This hurts a lot of paying customers.

Is what it is though.

I didn't notice it the section where they can go out to smoke, at least if I did it was insignificant to me that I didn't care.

In Lethbridge the Enmax center has a smoking section that has a fence that anybody can hop over to go out and smoke. It is monitored by a security guard who could probably be easily distracted. The part about the smoking section is its location. It is on the west side of the building, somewhat close to the west entrance and you have to walk by it if you park in the west parking lot. The wind normally blows from the west. You always get smoke wafting to you when it isn't very windy. I can't wait for it to go away.

So for the Saddledome, I just don't care about it. It doesn't affect me.

I wonder if this has anything with marijuana becoming legal, and not wanting people smoking weed around the building

i guess if you have the bad luck of sitting beside a smker during the game, it would somewhat nice to not have to deal with them coming back from a break smelling of fresh smoke.

it would be nice to hear from an expert on the security risk of this?

i assume that this would also apply to the players as well?

If that is the case, it won't stop people getting stoned in the parking lot before and after games. Same goes for smoking. When leaving the dome be prepared to have a thousand people light up the moment they leave the door.
