Kessel might want to come to Calgary to lose weight on the Johnny Gaudreau diet.

Remember when we heard the Frolik + 1st for Zucker deal was bigger than that... maybe the trade included Rask?

Rask is a cap dump and Zucker will be within a year if he isn’t one already.
Johnson is as well and the rumour mill has had Kessel being the source of locker room problems. It’s almost a little like the Hamilton trade.
Strange deal.

What I'm hearing: Kessel at the moment is not leaning towards waiving his NTC to go to Minnesota but that doesn't mean it ultimately couldn't happen eventually. However, there are a few clubs on his 8-team YES list that have contacted Pittsburgh so we'll see where that goes...
Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Penguins GM Jim Rutherford continues to talk to other teams about Kessel ... it's a question of when not if for Kessel to be dealt but where exactly remains TBD.

Jason Zucker is 27-years-old and has proven to be a consistent +20-goal/40-point player. It is nonsense to suggest that he is already a "cap-dump" on a contract that takes him to 31-years-old.

Crazy that we might have a big Flames trade prior to the draft this year. Or both.

I would not like this.

hmmmm....
"Whelp, we better trade the best playoff performing forward we have".

Yeah, Flames need more Sam Bennett's not less.
How many forwards on this roster are you comfortable with winning a board battle?
Tkachuk
Bennett
Lindholm
Hathaway
Mangiapane
That's about it. Everyone else is butter soft.
Every year we see the same thing in the playoffs. You need players who are hard on pucks and have the will to win puck battles, yet during the regular season, you get the same people praising about soft skill and how great it is.

Kessel had such a wonderful time in Toronto, i'm sure he's dying to come back and play in a Canadian market again.

Agreed. I've also long thought that 1st to be gone.

He was paid $5.5M for his 30+ goal 60+pt season. 20-40 for 5.5 is not a great deal. 4 years left makes it a slightly risky acquisition but it is not a pure cap dump I agree.

it's just a shame it will be used to augment next year's team instead of last years.
opportunity cost wasted.

Potentially but was one player changing the outcome of the playoffs?
Also look at Kevin Hayes. The Flames could have sent Dube+1st to get him and we likely can’t re-sign him. 1st and top prospect wasted. If Treliving moves the pick now the team gets a player for at least an entire season.

I can't think of one player, even Stone, who would have changed the outcome. And I totally agree on the rental cost. Heck, San Jose may be rethinking Karlsson.

Sure he is. I am sure playing for Tocchet again totally is worth playing for a losing team that has one foot out the door constantly.

This season notwithstanding, Kessel is a playoff beast. I'd welcome him on the Flames. Definitely more interesting than Zucker.

If he's ho-hum on Minneapolis he's certainly not going to waive his NTC for Calgary.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think the Flames will draft in the 1st round. If they move Brodie and Frolik they should be able to bring in a top 6 forward. Sign Lehner, as an example, to fix the goaltending and you fill two gaping lineup holes right there.
I'm probably biased on this because I'm not a fan of trading high picks.

Strong possibility, at this point I would say even likeliest scenario, is Brodie is with the team next season and either leaves as a free agent or is dealt mid-season in a deal to address scoring.
He didn't have a great ending to his season in Calgary, but all things considered he rounds out a defensive group and may be the best bet to keep Giordano in the 60+ point sphere.
Hard to come away from last season with the belief the team can afford to subtract any personnel really. Need to augment, augment, augment.
Having said that, Tre will have to be creative to keep Brodie and sign Tkachuk without moving another big ticket.

I see where you're coming from but I'd be surprised if Brodie is still with the Flames at training camp.
