3.9 isn't that much when you consider that number is with Cave or Jurco being the 12th and 13th forward. You get any of their younger guys like Benson or Macleod graduate it starts going down around 200k not including bonuses (only forward with significant bonus money on his ELC is Haas (600k) and Yamamoto (200k). If JP gets offersheeted or traded for something tangible coming back it probably cuts that cap space in half. On the back end, if Bouchard makes the team you now have to worry about his bonus money.

Only real big contract coming off is Gagner (3.1) so it isn't like there is much relief coming next season. That probably goes straight to Nurse who is an RFA.

Staples is amazing.
He keeps saying that the Oilers can squeeze a team looking to shed salary because the Oilers have $3MM in cap space.

Dave....the teams that are looking to shed salary...are the ones with $3MM in cap space.

Of course, the Oilers aren’t going to be favoured by anyone to win anything, even with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on the team, not until the team shows it can consistently play above real .500 in the NHL, something it has done just once over an entire season in the past 13 years. We’re now into the Dozen of Darkness, twelve years out of the playoffs in 13 years.
Instead of a bakers dozen, it's an Oilers dozen. Lose 12, win once. Thanks Staples!

I dont think he is wrong...Oilers are better off waiting with cap space than spending their money on any of the scraps left. I think Calgary would consider a lopsided trade (e.g. Stone for a 7th or Frolik for the current Caggiula equivalent + a pick)...

I am not saying the above trades happen...but each of the teams he lists are willing to give up 3rd and 4th line players (good enough to play on the Oilers 2nd or first line). In terms of FA scraps...I dont see anyone that would be better value.

A different way of wording this is...Edmonton has so many AHLers on their roster right now...that a team willing to dump even a mediocre one to get under the cap would be an improvement up north..

Annually we see far reaches sold as an optimistic future, but they're hitting new levels lately. Only ONE team on that list has LESS cap space than the Oilers themselves. All of the teams on that list are icing better teams than the Oilers. So which one of these teams are the Oilers in a position to squeeze?

The Oilers have $3,933,001 in cap space, an atrocious roster and fans expecting a playoff run. Any moron that's paid a small amount of attention to the Oilers situation should know this, and they're not exactly in 'take your bad contract' territory.

Has he shared any actual examples I've missed? I just scanned the teams he mentioned and I can't come up with a single example of something that would legitimately work. What >$4M package are you taking off teams for draft picks? How does that fix your team? Are you still making the playoffs with this >$4M castoff?
You're assuming David Staples put any actual thought or effort into researching something before he regurgitated it from the OBC? Doubtful at best.

Only in Edmonton is winning one round considered "a run." Staples is a joke.

The verdict is in from CBS Sports’ fantasy division Scout, whose formula and computations have churned out Computer Power Rankings and a negative prediction about the 2019-20 Edmonton Oilers, that the team will finish 24th overall in the NHL, projects to get 81 points and has a zero chance of winning the Stanley Cup.
Finally, some good research from Staples.

Well that's just exactly it isn't it. Staples is 100% right in that pretty much anyone left without a seat when the music stops will likely become an option for Ken. That 'pretty much anyone' might be a better option than what they have in their top-9 right now.

But for that mindset, you have to assume that they're aware that this is #31 looking to re-start putting a team together. Not a team that promotes itself as just outside the playoff picture - and once they're in... watch out!

What he's actually saying here, is that this is a playoff team that needs a few pieces that will squeeze out once everyone has put their rosters together. With all the success he had in re-building in the cap-era, it's on Krafty Ken to turn this roster and $3-4M into a playoff contender. What other teams are doing without should be enough to make that happen.

Ha, doubt it’s an original Staples term but I like his new upgrade in that article on the “Decade of Darkness”

Who are Nygard and Haas? And what business do the have being penciled in as a #1 left winger and #3 center with zero NHL experience. And that’s not even talking about Benson, who seems like an ok prospect, being assumed to be able to handle a top 6 roll. It’s crazy town up there. They are going to be sooo bad. I feel sorry for the kids in that organization, nothing is going to get better under Holland.

They have a player name Haas? That's awesome

Will he finally show promise after his third year then disappear back to mediocrity again?
