As a hockey fan where everything is very rigid and simple, I sure get a kick out of all the little quirks of baseball (the work day games being the most hilarious), but this one is just awesome.
"The following player is on waivers"
"We'll take him"
"Okay, now we'll revoke that. Would you like to perhaps work out a trade with us?"
"Well I guess if you revoked our claim then we'll go that route"
"Excellent".

I wonder if Bautista retires after this season.
Last year he battled injuries, but this year he is just terrible.
Hard to believe he is our lead off hitter right now.
There can't be any way the Jays FO picks up his option for next season, especially with all the OF's and potential DH's they have under team control.

Tigers just put Verlander on revocable waivers to see if anyone bites.

The Jays/Padres trade of Randy Myers trade in the late 90's was a hilarious example of the ridiculousness of this waiver rule.

If there was, the union would probably be all over it as collusion. Mostly, a team not in the playoff race wouldn't bother since these deals are usually for guys on expiring contracts, so there's nothing to gain by putting in a claim then trying to trade for them.
That said, there was really no way David Cone should have been available to us in 1992.

The risk in making a waiver claim is if the team waiving the player just says - he's yours. Example: Alex Rios

Jays are 5.0 games out of the WC.
Long shot. But they were 7 a couple days ago. Games left against every team they need to leapfrog except the Angels.
I've kind of counted them out, so I'm surprised that it's only 5 games. I don't think they can do it, it would take a lot plus some luck but it would be fun if they could somehow keep within some sort of a race.

It's painful watching Joey Bats play baseball right now. He can barely even move now and because of that can't play outfield very well at all anymore AND his bat has been consistently dreadful as well, making weak contact more often than not.
He just can't really play major league calibre baseball anymore. All he's good for at this point is the odd hint of what he used to be (as in the increasingly more rare big time dinger or a nice strong throw from the outfield).
Sad to say, but Bautista is done.

They'd be 9-1 in their last 10 if Osuna hadn't blown two saves this past week, and as a result only 3 games out.
Of course that stretch also includes two improbable walk off grand slam Jays wins, so I guess it evens out. But still, feels like such a season of missed opportunities.
