The stupiest part is what really do you have to gain by filming a practice. This isn't the NFL where it's a game of individual plays that reset where a game plan and predicting the exact play they are going to call is important.
I doubt there is anything you could gain from filming that practice that you couldn't get from watching game film.
I would argue the stupidest part is that they should beat New Zealand 10 times out of 10. To do this and risk it all when you do not need to is so stupid.

No surprises on set plays and breakouts and coverage.
It would be like droning a team practising for game one of the Cup finals. Figuring out how a team was preparing for you.
And you have to know that if they got caught now, that they've done this before, and planned to do it again. the question is how often has Canada cheated like this.

Thing is I don't think you even get much from that. Maybe some unique wrinkles in a set play, or breaking a press or something...but honestly sports like Hockey and Soccer are so dynamic and fluid that it's rare that something like that is make or break.
Just stupid all around and IMO with little reward.
This isn’t the first time in the recent history of Canadian soccer this has happened. Herdman and Canada were accused of flying a drone and spying on Honduras during the men’s World Cup qualifying. Don’t think anything ever came of it but it may be standard practice for the Canadians
I think the bigger deal in this is how illegal it must be to fly a drone without permission around Paris
It's as if the CSA got a drone (the aforementioned occurace vs Honduras) and figured they have to use it.
It's embarrassing more than anything else. New Zealand or even the Final.
There's enough video of these teams to figure out basic tactics, including penalties, which won't matter in this game, and I don't think they are trying to figure out if there are injuries.
It's also now a distraction that the players don't need.
She seemed a little too glib yesterday in her pre-reheased apology about removing herself for the game today.
No assistant coaches really do anything tactically without some direction from their boss as head coach at this level of sport. Sounds like it was done before and someone sang.
But yes she's done as cosch. COC removed her, but had to have CSA suspend her first. CSA never doesn't anything proactively.
It is against all fair play however this is not isolated and likely more will be released, and especially as it is seeming this was regular practice by flying drones at other country closed practice.
I hate that Canada did this!!
Spying and cheating is not new - Canada only the latest caught:
"...Asked if he had sent anyone to spy on another team during his career, Guardiola said: "In other countries everybody does that. They are open. When I was training in Munich there were people on the mountain [overlooking training] with cameras and long lenses watching what we were doing. Everybody does it.
"It's the culture of all the clubs, not just the previous ones where I worked. It was a part of the club. But I'm not going to send someone to Huddersfield if that is the question."..."
Some staff and contractors were told the filming was part of their jobs and that they could lose their positions with the federation if they did not go along with the demands, one of the sources said in a series of interviews with TSN on Wednesday and Thursday.
“In a couple of scenarios, people have been pushed and have been told, ‘You have to give 110 percent and this is part of the job so if you don’t feel comfortable with doing this, you do not have a place on the team
Pretty detailed by Westhead. CSA has pressured "contractors" to do this for a number of years ("or else"), and those that have refused, CSA staff have gone in their place.
Our Association continues to be a joke and hurts the game in this country more than it has helped it for decades.

Side note rant. TSN has done next to nothing for soccer in this country. They couldn’t even be bothered to broadcast all of the non-Canada Copa games on one of their million channels! But the second there’s something amiss Westhead and the gang are in there like vultures. I dunno, just rubs me the wrong way.
All that said, sounds like Marsch has shut it down on the men’s side and Blue is showing everyone who is in charge. AND! At least they’re not Hockey Canada
TSN is trash, but I'm totally OK with Rick Westhead. He does good work, and if it takes him to drag this stuff into the daylight, then so be it. Whether Canada Soccer or Hockey Canada - these organizations need to be held accountable, and he's one of the few that can and does.

If it bleeds, it leads. I think those who cover the game regularly are right to be pissed off at what's happening, but a lot of the outrage is just journalists who couldn't care less about the game piling on.
TSN had great coverage of Canada's Copa America run because they owned the rights and Westhead was silent through it all. He'll pop back up randomly for a negative piece and then go ambulance chase a different sport for a while.

The guy does investigative journalism into sports and not puff pieces. What a stupid take.

Well after denials that the players never saw these videos, it turns out that the Men used the video to prepare. I expect that the woman used their practice videos as well.
The pressure is going to be on to strip the woman of the gold and toss them out of these Olympics.
