I'm pretty skeptical this will be done for fall of 2013, still so much work to go. If you read the initial planning blurbs it seems like they are 6 months to a year behind.

What you know of as the Deerfoot/ 22X interchange right now is going to look massively different this time next year. There will be a total of 7 bridges at that intersection alone.
As far as schedule goes it sounds like they are still shooting for a fall 2013 opening but they are going to need another good winter that they can get some work done to get them back on track.
They still have to start driving piles to work on the over pass at sundance/ 22X
|
Do you think that they will have that overpass done in time for Fall 2013? All they really have done there is build the roadways towards Sundance Blvd

Red Deer piling has pulled up all of their gear and has gone onto their next contract and they still have 200 piles to drive. They were supposed to be finished by the 30th of July. But Chinook is not ready so they have moved on for now.
If we have another mild winter like we did last year I think they can get back on track but if we have a long wet winter they wont be done by next fall. It is hard to see but the do have a fair amount of the actual road work finished they just have to get approaches
I saw last night that the Lake Chaperal east bound 22X ramp is open and being used.

While they may be behind schedule, the penalties are such that I'm sure they will find a way regardless of the problems.

Yeah, I am fairly surprised at the number of nights and weekends they have been working (Well, except this one of course). I came home from the airport at 2:00 am one night last month, and they had a crew out working.

I really can't see how they can finish this road in 15 months. Off the top of my head:
- Bridge deck at Sun Valley Blvd has not been raised. I can't even remember if they have the pilings in.
- Interchange at Cranston should be complete by then
- Bridge decks at Deerfoot have not been raised
- Bridge deck at 52nd Street has not been raised
- They aren't even done building the hills up at 114th.
- Glenmore and Peigan don't yet have bridge decks, iirc
Given how slowly the work has progressed overall, I'd be amazed if this thing opens before mid 2014.

Lots of work to do, yes, but certainly doable. You'd be surprised how much an approaching deadline can speed up work. There's only a few interchanges that are further behind, and those shouldn't be a problem, I don't think. They haven't done more than installing piles at 17 ave. however, they easily could have the girders up yet this year.
There's a lot of work left to be done at the Deerfoot interchange, as no girders for any of the 7 new bridges are up.

From a layman's perspective, the only one that seems terribly behind is Sun Valley Blvd, as they haven't even completed the by pass or started the pilings yet. Deerfoot is probably a little behind as well, but I think the other ones are close. I think the complexity of the entire 52nd - Deerfoot - Cranston interchange is such that they can't really open it in a phased approach though.

What's the update on the SW portion? Have the Tsuu Tina negotiations progressed? I was never clear on where the extension would go in relation to COP...I heard the idea is for Stoney to be an extension of 101st down to hwy 8. Has that right of way been locked in?

The initial bridge deck work for the North East section was very slow to start too, but once they got girder fabrication sorted out they really started chugging, they caught up in a very fast fashion. I'm certain something similar will end up happening here. (Or rather, it kinda has to for things to get on track)

The important thing to note is that last time the deal fell through- the sticking point was the land the province was going to swap was still under lease until either 2012 or 2013. The legal language in the deal had to account for that, and to the average person it sounded like a bunch of "maybe's." Now that we are nearing the ends of those leases, the new deal could be struck with much more solid wording.
And Ric McIver who is now trasportation minister already has a rapport with the Tsuu T'ina and has said he is working on negotiations.

If Mclver gets this done, he won’t have done anything different than his predecessors, other than being in office during the right term when a deal could be struck.
Despite disliking him, get-er-done Mclver, I want a full ring road!
Interesting note about the legal language of land which will be free in a year holding up a deal that size!

The 22x has been realigned under 88th street. I believe this is the first new permanent roadway to be opened to the public for the SE portion.

We need to elect a Realtor into office. Have he or she act as transportation minister.
The Realtor will get the deal done. Realtor's are used to negotiating. Not sure what Ric McIvor has been doing as transportation minister......

Chief Big Plume is "very encouraged" with recent talks between the TT and the new Prov Government.
He sure doesn't paint the last government very well.

if this road gets built, I will pledge to Gamble at the Grey Eagle Casino at least once a week. Living in Evergreen, the trip to the casino will be a very short commute.

The TT have never negotiated in good faith. They are selfish and unsophisticated. For an example of what they could be they should look to the Westbank First Nation in Kelowna.
