It is very awkward in reference to a person, especially in the context of evaluating talent.

Thats because when talking about prospects they are discussed and viewed like commodities and not people.

Pretty much this. It's also used to refer to their talent/skill/potential. Being "high on" a player isn't being high on them as a person, it's being high on their collective qualities as a player.

Duhatchek on the FAN talking about a Hanifin+ swap for OEL. Basically talking about what he wrote about on the Athletic. Mentions Markstrom and the Swedish Mafia Calgary is building. Doesn’t sound like it is a rumor more of a conclusion Duha has hypothesized based on the Treliving/Maloney relationship with the player and addition of Markstrom.
Hanifin+Ryan is pretty much a cap wash. Would be a risky gamble for the Flames.

I thought OEL had set a deadline to be traded and that deadline had passed so he's staying?

Especially when you consider the cap implications it would have next year. It would make it hard to re-sign Dube, Valimaki and Bennett. Especially if they earn big raises.

I would do Hanifin and Lucic for OEL, but I wouldn't even consider Hanifin and Ryan.

Its intriguing, and more than a little scary, but does Arizona save anything up front? I suppose they're more concerned with a year or two down the road when the savings kick in having OEL off the books and then Ryan off the books.

I don't think OEL is an upgrade at this point in his career. Hanifin still has room to grow. And you're throwing in Ryan just to make the cap a wash. Simply don't understand the incentive for the Flames.
Then again I don't understand the obsession with trying to move Hanifin to begin with. With his great contract, I would expect nothing short of a dazzling return.

We couldn’t even consider this unless Lucic was involved IMO.
How could we make it work?
Hanifin, Lucic ++ for OEL otherwise it is impossible to manage capwise.

Pietrangelo just signed for what OEL makes.... I’ll be furious if he is brought in without being paid handsomely to take him.
The Hat is crazy here.

Yup, was just about to write in Lucic.
Thats the only way I consider Hanifin for OEL. ARI has to take a bad contract back.

Still want absolutely nothing to.do.with OEL in CGY. Theres no need for it. Only way is Gio going the other way IMO. Because that's who he would be replacing by way of term.
Giving up youth over cap is a no go in team building IMO.
OeL- Tanev
Hanifin-Andersson
Valimaki-Kylington
Macki-Yelesin
Thats how its have to look. And thats not even considering theres still a lot of work to do to the FW group like the Flames want.
End of the day, I just don't see the fit and Duha really went reaching on this one.

Gio for OEL is a bad exchange of contracts, skill, leadership and flexibility.

I agree. Would have to include Lucic. Even then, it’s a giant cap hit for a long time. Including Lucic would save yotes actual $, so makes sense that way.
I don’t know what you would have to add to get yotes to retain some salary, would be a huge add considering they need to shed salary.
So probably doesn’t make sense.
Plus, I also hate the idea of Hanifin’s contract being traded for OEL’s contract.
Handcuffs us for years.

My point exactly. Theres no way around building a successful deal that the yotes would entertain and fhe Flames still being able to do things. Its not even this season but down the road at seasons 5 and 6, hell years 2,3 and 4 as well would obliterate cap structure.

It's pretty odd that Duha keeps going on about this.

OELs contract even if he was to waive (which according to him he wont) is so toxic its basically unmovable if you're wanting value. Like they want a haul to move their captain but I think they have to pay someone to take him.

I think hockey writers are waiting for something to report and analyze...maybe this falls in the “if there is no news, make some news” category
