Zadorov and Gudbranson both played a huge role in the Flames' success this past season. All commentators who are former NHL'ers spoke to this. Even Bieksa, who is definitely not a homer, said: "it is very difficult for any offensive line to play against these two huge, physical and experienced d-men for a number of reasons. And they are only playing 5/6-role minutes." G/Z provided an incredible depth to the Flames' defense on modest budget and Sutter was able to improve the offensive productivity based on that. Unfortunately, it did not translate into the playoffs success and I am still struggling with "why?", but that's another topic. As for Zadorov's role, let's not forget, he is well-known for making rather dumb defensive decisions with the puck, he is not too disciplined (likes to drive to the net all alone without a good reason and then rushing back haplessly to catch up on an opposition's breakaway), and he is a bit on a slower side for his skating. There is a reason he was without a long-term contract for such a big and experienced guy. I am glad his play has improved under Sutter, but he needs more of that system to progress. I hope, he signs a 3-4 year deal with the Flames at around $4M, but if he doesn't, well, we have some guys in Stockton almost ready to take up his spot.

It was "very difficult" because they were playing against the other teams worse offensive players. They were heavily sheltered. Make no mistake, they played very well, but they have serious limitations.

Haha. I'm actually enjoying how we've continued the conversation under the same thread title only because it apparently is bothering some people so much!

Sweet we re-signed him for 1 year 3.75 again? Pretty decent I'd say

Using what for cap room? There was no possible way the Flames could add a $6.75 million hit at the deadline.

It would be pro rated, didn’t they have some room? Could’ve made room if not
Doesn’t really matter anyways, their season is done

Plus the wrinkle of not being able to eat salary to trade a player back to the team you selected him from (Seattle point of view)
Calgary couldn't have competed in that market anyway.

If memory serves, they had only about half a million in prorated cap space on deadline day. As it was, calling up a replacement for Monahan required using LTIR space.
And Bingo is right, the fact that Seattle couldn't retain any salary in a deal with Calgary basically made it impossible.
I mean, it would have been nice. There just wasn't any feasible way to do it.
