Default The Home Improvement Thread

Thought I'd make a general home improvement thread for quick questions, advice, etc. that people may wish to post.

First question - Anyone have a Blanco silgranite sink they installed in their kitchen that might be able to snap a picture of it from the bottom so I can take a look at the bracket system? I'm having some issues with the one I'm trying to install and want to see if I am missing something simple.

Edit to add: Looking specifically for a drop-in mounting, not under-mount.

He works for Binford.

I can also tell you that i learned a fun lesson today regarding mortar powder.

I was filling up a bucket to mix up some tile mud and as I was pouring the powder half the bag contents slumped out at once and and air pocket got trapped resulting in an explosion of dry powder that shot up and hit me in the left eye as it was wide open. That sucked!

I rinsed my eye for about an hour then decided to hit the emergency room to get my eye flushed. I am the proud new owner of a scratched eyeball, poor depth perception and perpetual look of giving someone the stink eye!

Lesson today - wear the glasses when filling up buckets now too!

Never used to be much of a glasses guy when doing reno stuff and such, but I wear them all the time now. Sucks pretty hard, as you know, getting crap in your eyes. Plus there's pretty comfy safety glasses out there these days.

Wear at minimum a dust mask too, respirator better, mortars and grouts have high silica content and that dust is not good for you.

Update! - I managed to sleep 10 hrs last night leaving my eye feeling much better today. No longer feels like sand under my eyelid. I am lucky, but still sporting a bit of stink eye.

I wear safety glasses all the time doing renos but still manage to get crap in my eyes. Drives me nuts. I tried out a pair of googles to see if that would help, only thing they do is fog up.

Just about to blow up my kitchen and do a complete reno. Going to enlist the help of my g/f's dad whom owns his own cabinet making shop. Can't wait to see the results. The drawers and boxes he built for my main bathroom upstairs were very well done. Soft close doors and drawers to boot.

However I think the single neatest feature is a small flip down door just above the main doors on the counter top that is just big enough for a 2 tubes of toothpaste and 2 toothbrushes. The more crap I can keep off the countertop, the better.

That sounds cool, do you have any pics? I like having a clean counter as well.

We're just on the tail end of a kitchen reno, with the light at the end of the tunnel getting brighter. Got the sink left, OTR microwave, and then the small finishing stuff like baseboards (hate those), window trim, etc. My significant other is a kitchen designer, so she designed the whole thing and then a buddy who used to run a kitchen company mounted the cabiinets, etc. Everything else though, my SO and I did; from demo, to new electrical, drywall, new underlay on the subfloor, etc. Been a long road but man does it look good!

And yeah, soft close is so awesome!

Ill be running some speaker wire across my wall above the baseboard, any recommendation on how to hide this? I was considering using the same color paint as my wall and painting up some PVC pipping, is there another option I haven't considered?

What about pulling the baseboard off and then making a channel in the drywall for the speaker wire?

How easily does baseboard come off? Do I just grab a crowbarÉ

Why is it so damn hard to get a drywaller in to give me a ceiling quote? I don't even care if they have a 2 month backlog I just need a damn quote to plan finances.

Out of the 4 guys I've contacted, 3 keep saying "they'll get ahold of me when they're available for a quote", and the one that showed up looked at it, left, and never gave me a quote and won't respond to my emails.

I'm not a horrible dude or anything! There's only one bulkhead, it's like a 12 hour job tops.

He manages a restaurant in Denver and is one sly dog with the single moms who work as waitresses - just what I heard.

A couple of my kitchen improvement projects:

Made the drawer boxes myself with prefinished drawer sides from Richelieu. Slides are Blum undermount, soft closing. Notice that you can't see any hardware on the sides of the drawer.

Also made from prefinished drawer sides. I couldn't use undermount slides here, becasue they are sold in pairs, and I would have needed two right hand side slides. Also soft closing, but I haven't adjusted them enough for the soft closing to work completely yet. Do you know how hard it is to work in a 6" wide cabinet?

Both cabinets were just full height "empty space with one single shelf only at the back. Now I can store about 4x the amount of stuff in each.

Had the guys at Copper Brook Cabinets install a media unit. Fits my new 70" TV perfectly... lost 1.5" from the design so I was a bit worried. Great for watching Dora the Explorer. I need to get some bookshelf speakers and run the wire through the cabinets but I will wait for a bit before doing that. This thing is huge though!

Before kick plate and fillers. This was take at night with my iphone but they are off white to match my baseboards.

Elf on the shelf. 70" of Dora.

With fillers

How much did that built-in unit run? Normally do all my own work, but considering hiring the built-ins that I need to a sub.

Beautiful built in! But now you're stuck with 70 inches . Oh the humanity!

As for removing baseboards...very easy...exacto knife to cut along the top...hammer...small pry bar\crowbar...pry slowly. After reinstall use dap along the top to hide any imperfections.
