I am a fan of the "win and you're in" strategy this season.

However I'm willing to give smith a couple more weeks. I think this stretch at home and the opportunity to practice as a team will be really important. If it gets Smith's head screwed on straight, that's a key.

Make no mistake, I think this is smith's last season in Calgary and think that rittich is the better goalie right now - but I think smith's intensity and desire to win is something we need on the roster right now. I hope he can start contributing to more victories.

Smith was either in a 1A/1B or a back-up situation for most of his career. It's not a bad thing. Most NHL goalies fall into that area. Right now, I wonder if he can even be a reliable 1B though.

Both of our goalies are unknowns at this point, but one has been trending up and the other down.

That could also turn into a locker room poison if Smith doesn't keep his ego in check and continues to blame the team when he plays like crap, which I believe already happened after the Anaheim loss

It was rumoured to have happened, and If that rumour is to be believed, it was another veteran who put him in his place. Not only that, the veteran who did it is reportedly a friend of Smith's and cited Smith as a big reason he signed in Calgary.

It can absolutely be poison. But it can also be part of a room holding each other accountable, Smith included.

That 1A/1B experience may be a good thing. He is able to use his knowledge and experience to support Rittich in becoming a 1A. I think where you have the present situation with two goalies with such a wide variation in age, experience and relative success, it is usually the more senior goalie that mentors the younger one, and helps him succeed for the good of the team.

I still think Smith has it in him to be a 1A, and as the year goes on,I think the best case would be for him and Rittich to share the starting position.

I haven’t noticed the upper gear being a notable issue with him. I do recall the SJ goal less than a minute in going glove side, a bad 5 hole goal against Anaheim, etc.
I have not read the article (am not a subscriber); my retort is more in response to the notion that the colour of Smith's pads are having a dramatic effect on his performance. I simply don't believe it.

Edmonton says no. Talbot has potential to improve while I believe we are witnessing the end of Smith's career.

This seems a bit arbitrary, no? I am not necessarily disagreeing with the outcomes you forecast, but I could just as easily assert that Smith has the potential to rebound, while Talbot is now playing for his second straight season like a career backup goalie—something he was for a while before landing in Edmonton.

I think age difference alone makes it a big no on Edmonton's side.

I tend to agree, and I actually like Talbot. I am just not convinced that Smith is completely useless.

If we can't land Varlamov or Bobrovsky then Talbot is probably our next best option. Playing behind a real defense will probably help.

I do not want Talbot...

Go with Rittich. he's earned it. hopefully two periods of good play don't overshadow the 20 previous bad periods in a row from Smith.

How do you not reward Rittich with another start after a shutout, and after he's outplayed Smith significantly?

One has no long-term future in Calgary. The other might. Rittich must be wondering what else he has to do to get more chances.

I am pretty sure Rittich knows better than everyone where he stands within the organization. Just because he is not starting the next game it does not mean that he is also not being rewarded with more opportunities.

People seem to forget that Rittich is a second-year goalie. He has a grand-total of 22 NHL starts on his resume, with only 16 of those in his rookie season. He is on track to start close to 30-games this year with the likelihood that it could be more. That on its own is a HUGE reward for a guy in his position.

Hey Penguins, we will be happy to take your two time SC champion goalie off your hands seeing how you have demoted him to backup status.
