I am so happy with this signing. Feels good to get a true starting goalie in what feels like forever!

One of my Grandpas always called it that. Thanks for the great memory!

Elliott and Smith weren't thought of as a plugs when they came to Calgary.
This kind of thinking is revisionist history.

If memory serves, the Flames allow fewer screened, slot-line and odd-man chances than average. They surrender more perimeter and slot chances than most, and Markstrom is very strong at stopping perimeter shots (ie. he doesn't give up many bad goals) and slot shots. Sounds like he's a good fit.
|
I just listened to it, and I believe Woodly said that Markström did not give up ANY bad goals last season.

Smith for sure was a plug. Old and floppy. I wanted to puke everytime the announcers say he was great at moving the puck. Course they never mention when he costs us a goal against with his puck handling once every 3rd game.

They certainly weren't the best goalies available
Elliott had good numbers on a stacked team
Smith was maybe good but old (same age as Markstrom at the END of this deal)

And they were getting good at boxing teams to the perimeter vs wpg and dal.
You could argue a good number of goals that the Stars scored were of the medium to low danger variety. A number from their D pretty far out.
If Markstrom significantly reduces the amount of those that find a way in then we're going to be in good shape.

Elliott, yes. We genuinely thought he was good, especially after the pre season.
Smith was never anyone’s first choice for anything, and many maligned his acquisition at the time.

He was 100% on shots that he could see outside of a certain area or something like that. They talked about it during the playoffs vs minnesota.
He then gave one up to Fiala like 2 minutes later. It was actually kind of funny.

I'm pretty sure he let in back to back goals from centre ice last year. haha It was on the misplays of the week/month/year.

Francis is such a moron.
Claiming Talbot was the better option.
Fails to account for him being older and not starter-proven.
Idiot. Buffoon. Take your pizzas and get out of our city.
