can anyone do a quick summary of the advantages (if any) to a windows 7 phone?
It's still in it's infancy, so it's more of a style thing right now. There are some pretty noticeable things missing, but that's the case with all 1st gen devices. Remember how outrageous it was that the iPhone couldn't cut and paste a few years ago? Ya. This phone can't quite do that yet. They will catch up, but it'll be a while before the playing field evens.
The coolest thing and most different thing about Windows Phone 7 HTC surround whatever other words are in the title is that it has live update tiles on the home screen.
So rather than going into each app and loading surfing etc, it pushes all the updates you want right onto your screen. So if nothing interesting has happened in news, facebook, twitter, whatever else, nothing updates and you see that at a glance.
Alternatively, if your friend updates his status on FB you see it right away without entering the app.
The whole point is that it's a faster check so your not constantly absorbed by your phone.

I don't get why that is the defacto complaint about Windows Phone 7 (not from you, tech blogs, podcasts etc). Cut and paste is such a pain on the iPhone that I have used it about half a dozen times since it was put into the software. No doubt the Windows software is missing something, but the cut and paste is pretty a meh complaint IMO. I guess the larger complaint is that it's missing many little things.
I haven't used it, but it looks like a pretty credible OS. I'll be interested to see where it goes in the coming months. I bet updates will be coming out pretty frequently once it gets going.
I still think this phone is going to get some serious developer backing from the Windows community. C# is a really nice language and Visual Studio is probably the best IDE on the planet right now. Add in the whole Xbox Live Arcade aspect for gaming, and this thing will really take off.
It all hinges on the stability of the OS, and I think people are less concerned about that after using Windows 7 for a couple years.

Well I never!

Its called a widget, and its not new or different unless you're comparing it to iOS.
