Default Sutter: Time running out for PTOs

Asked Sutter today what factors into the evaluation of the PTO players this morning. He suggested he hasn't seen enough yet and with a few preseason games left and cuts coming. Time is running out for those guys.

If both Cody Eakin and Sonny Milano get cut then who will be their replacement?

Phillips maybe?

I wouldn't be surprised if Klapka gets rewarded with a few games to start the year as well, especially if Ritchie is still out.

I think both those guys have outplayed the PTOs.

Still think Stone gets a contract too.

I can see Michael Stone getting a contract still and there’s always at least one surprise and that could be Adam Klapka this year.

If we sign the PTO's and they haven't done anything it wont send a good message, and people will get upset they are holding young players down by signing vets. The other part is the PTO's have to grab a spot and seems like no one is actually producing. Doesn't seem like the ideal situation, young guys unable to take the spot and the vets unable to take it either.

Probably just my technical ineptitude, but on my phone I cannot click "continue reading" on the article.

I would hope we get to see both Phillips and Pelletier in at least one more preseason game, preferably with more NHL-calibre linemates. Mangiapane-Kadri-Phillips would be nice to see.

Stone is getting a contract.

Unless someone offers to send Stone to the moon, he is getting a contract in Calgary for probably league minimum.

Then one day, when he retires he will be hired as the Flames' 'Slapshot Coach.' The first position of its kind.

I don’t see either getting cut at this point. Both are better than anything we’ve seen from anyone else. Ruzicka is the best option beyond the tryouts and AK-43 I has the edge IMO over either Pelletier and Phillips. Both of the players have been a disappointment and should be sent down.

If the Flames Waive Mackey, Ruzicka and Valimaki, I would say there's almost no chance that at least 1 player isn't claimed.

Klapka was good in Penticton but Phillips was easily better against Seattle

Pelletier has been fighting the puck but has been excellent on the PK and is generally getting to good spots on the ice with the puck, just fighting the puck once he has it.

Honestly IMO it’s tough to expect these guys to stand out when they’ve only played road games with subpar lineups against other teams better lineups

I would say Milano has been pretty underwhelming, too. Premature to cut any of that main group of candidates without more game action — that's what the preseason is for.

Mackey might be the most utilitarian player of those three. At this point, teams are looking for 6th, 7th defensemen and Mackey may be better than what they have.

I would think there's a better than 70 percent chance Mackey starts in the NHL.

So far everyone has said Milano has looked decent in the games he has been in, obviously decent wont cut it better that doesn't sound like underwhelming to me. At least he acknowledged he has to show more tonight.

Remember that Sutter says what he thinks the players need to hear.

Contracts aside Milano has been the best of the bubble guys IMO

Well after Stone

My issue with evaluating Milano is he has not been played with the players he is auditioning to play with . The B squad guys he has played with have all underwhelmed .. should've been getting reps with Backlund and Kadri with the A team to get a good sense if he can fit in there . Just my thought

They are not making it easy on these PTOs . Playing with AHL forwards against edm's vets will again be a challenge
