No, he's literally still being paid by them. And will be for two more years after this one.
It's not a lump sum. The buyout, like the cap-hit, is spread out over twice the remaining term.

Ha. It would be awesome if he had just enough left in the tank to make the team.
Hopefully the coach is one of those types that gives veterans all the rope in the world, so he saddles Johnny with Neal on his line to try to "get him going". Experiment ends after 40 games and Johnny is at 0.3ppg. Columbus misses by 28 points.
