My GGOTD is my next bill for AMA’s yearly donation… er…. Subscription. Not sure what I’ve gained from them over the years despite paying. At this point I’d have been better off putting my yearly fee into savings for a rainy day.

You could just not pay. It's basically a form of insurance, with perks. If you don't think you need that insurance, the solution is rather simple, entirely within your control.

Just taking advantage of the 3 cents/l off Shell gas will likely cover the cost

I've heard you can buy an AMA membership on the spot if you need to call for a battery/tow/flat/etc

Another little known service (AFAIK) is that you can call for help with a flat tire on your bike. I'm not exactly sure how they help (presumably bring a tube and fix it? I bet lots of their drivers don't know how to do that though...), but it could be handy if you actually think of it at the time

I like my AMA membership, I use it. I find the AMA discount at Shell will add up to a decent amount of savings per year (that pays a bit of the yearly fee), and each year I seem to need their tire service once or twice, which then more than pays itself off at that point. Bonus - you can also book AMA to come install your winter or summer tires, right at your home.

It's not free with AMA.

There's lots of mobile tire services companies in town that will do this for you.

There's been a few times I've had too many drinks out and called AMA to tow my car home and I've ridden up front with the driver.

You can but they charge you $50 on top of membership now.

For real. Although tow trucks are designed for cars that have already been in an accident, I figure using them to prevent one is just as good.

And it looks like you can only get the 'basic' benefits on that instant use, so only a 5km tow. I don't know what a private emergency tow costs...a quick google indicates $75-125, but that feels a little optimistic. Or $96+$50=$146 and you get the other services for the rest of the year.

Being on my parents membership definitely came in handy when I was in Uni...I needed 2 tows on one road trip for the stupidest problems (#### Ford) - that definitely would've hurt.

AMA has some interesting perks on top of the commonly known ones that can add up quickly if you know how to exploit them. There's a surprising amount of decent deals on AMA, but sometimes I find they're just not completely practical to pursue.

You can get a park pass for like $10 off at an AMA centre. I assumed a membership was required to purchase at discount, but I could be wrong.

AMA's car rental portal is kinda whacky, but I found a deal that was cheaper than Costco by around $300 a few months ago.

The tire swap thing isn't free, but for someone aging or someone with a recent injury, it's a useful option to consider.

Almost hit a cyclist on my commute this morning who had the brilliant idea of passing me on the right while I was about to turn. Just the worst people they are.

Also, most hotel chains in Canada and US will give 10% off the posted rate to AMA/AAA members. Three night-stay @ $150/night - $45 saving right there.

How long ago?
I thought that tow drivers don't allow people into their trucks any longer, moreso since covid hit.
