SpaceX tried to lower expectations when it launched its Starlink satellite internet beta on October 26 — but some users say they're already hitting download speeds of more than 160 megabits per second, faster than 95% of US connections, according to the speed-test provider Ookla.

One person on the West Coast posted a screenshot on the Starlink Reddit community of a speed test showing a download speed of 161 Mbps. They were one of many to share their speed in recent days.

Another person who said they were in rural Montana said that their download speed was 174 Mbps and that their upload speed was 33 Mbps. "Starlink will forever change the game," they said.

In an October 26 email, SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, said users in the "Better Than Nothing Beta" — in which a network of nearly 900 satellites is beaming internet service down to Earth — could expect speeds of between 50 Mbps and 150 Mbps.

Plus, Musk said that there were speed increase and improved latency coming as well.

The public beta for SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet is consistently topping speeds of 150 megabits per second (Mbps), faster than SpaceX promised — and now the biggest technical challenge is making the kit cheaper, CEO Elon Musk said.
Nearly all users who have reported their November speeds on a list compiled by Reddit's Starlink community said they are getting download speeds higher than 150 Mbps. The fastest download speed was 205.82 Mbps, recorded in Bellevue, Washington.
In an email sent October 26, SpaceX said users on the "Better Than Nothing Beta" test could expect speeds of between 50 Mbps and 150 Mbps. A network of nearly 900 satellites is currently beaming the internet service down to Earth.
The Reddit list shows Starlink speeds over the summer, before public beta launched on October 26, dipped as low as 15 Mbps. SpaceX has warned Starlink subscribers that they may experience "brief periods of no connectivity at all" — and users said their internet is indeed cutting out sometimes.

The public beta costs nearly $600 upfront to join: $499 for a tripod, a WiFi router, and a terminal to connect to the Starlink satellites, plus $99 for a monthly subscription.
Reducing the costs of the terminal included in the Starlink kit is SpaceX's "most difficult technical challenge," Elon Musk tweeted Tuesday.
His tweet was in response to someone who had just setup a terminal to connect to the Starlink satellites. The user said it was "really cheap."

One of the questions people have been having is in regards to rainy weather.

A few of the beta testers have posted their results, and rain doesn't seem to affect the speed and latency that much. There were some results posted on foggy days, and those were pretty good as well.

Still waiting for results for super cloudy days.

I wonder if snow on the dish would be an issue? It looks like they point mostly straight up, so you might have to clear it.

Petition going for the remaining needed licensing.

https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/P...etition=e-2896

The CRTC license was given and they referenced the amount of signatures they got, so definitely worth signing this one if Starlink is of interest to you.

Thanks, signed the petition. Really hoping we can get in on the Beta when it's available in Canada.

Note that the petition is trying to get the House of Commons to look into the ISED licensing a little more and push it along. Good idea to email your MP with a link.

Already has 2x more signatures than the CRTC petition, and that one got a response.

There have been rumors that the dish will increase in temperature to help melt the snow, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Looks like Canadians should start seeing some beta invites this week. Hopefully Linus Tech Tips is one of the first to get it.

Also multiple users on reddit saying that there is a heater built into the dish to melt off the snow. Snowstorms in Montana this past weekend, and for the most part the connection was fine. The snow melted off the dish.

Does anyone know what kind of cable will be used to connect from dish to router? I hope it's, just a regular network cable then I can use the one already installed for my Eidnet satellite internet. I'd prefer not to have to drill more holes if possible.

Cat6e apparently. It is best to use the cable that came with it since the dish can heat up to melt the snow.

Got my invite last night. $749.70 total including shipping and taxes for the equipment + another expense for the mount depending if you need one or which one you need($24 or 99$ US) + $129 + tax a month for service. Still debating signing up as it's a pretty big expense for us right now. Pretty sure they are selling the equipment at a loss and it's cutting edge tech.... but still.
Apparently beta invites are good for a couple days so I'll give it some more thought. I'm at a reasonably steady 20 mb/s now so I'm not completely desperate or anything.

So I'm signed up and the kit and mount are supposed to be here tomorrow. Super pumped to see the results. No more taking turns with the family on who gets to watch a movie or download their games etc. Game changer!
