Default Help Needed: Networking Issue

I'm having an issue with my home network and was hoping someone here might have some insight into the problem.

Here's my set up:

Internet comes in > Shaw router > Airport Extreme > 24 Port Switch > network ports throughout the house.

All the ports work if they're connected directly to the device (computer, PS3, TV, etc). However, when I make a wired connection to the TimeMachine in my office (which connects to my iMac and external drive) the internet connection slows down and crashes throughout the house (wifi and wired).

Any idea why connecting the TimeMachine would cause this?

Is there a backup that is running while things get slow?

Is the time machine trying to act as a DHCP server? I'm not sure if it even has that functionality as I don't own one. If so, however, it could be competing for IP address supremacy with the Airport Express (or whatever is handling your DHCP duties - maybe the Shaw router?), resulting in conflicts.

It gets slow before the Timemachine backup starts.

I think it's the competing IP addresses as that's the an error I'm getting when running TVMOBiLi on my Mac to my Samsung (for video streaming).

I've somewhat resolved the issue by plugging the the iMac directly into the wall and the external drive directly to it and connecting to the Time Capsule via wifi.

The backups won't be as quick as wired but at least the downloads to the computer will be quicker.

If that's the issue, turn off DHCP on one of them, probably the Time Capsule.

Some of your networked devices might need a reboot following this.

Yup try putting the Time Capsule in bridge mode and reboot said devices as Rathji said.

Should do the trick.
