Assistant Coach, to a special advisor, right to GM?

Interesting, but good for him and wish him the best

I had no clue Grier was moving through coaching and management ranks, so for that reason, this came as a bit of a surprise to me.

Nice to see new blood instead of the usual carousel of GMs and coaches

This just seems like a "Jankowski pick" sort of hire. Off the board, no one is expecting, and could turn out great.

Or it could be just like Jankowski.

It's nice to see some new blood in management. He was a good player and spent three years at Boston U, so I assume he must have some smarts as well.

I wonder if he eases in or tries for a huge splash in UFA/draft day transactions.

Reminds me of the Garth Snow appointment.

For sure. There's only been one black assistant GM, Brett Peterson in Florida and that was only 2 years ago.

I think it's the wrong move given his lack of GM experience at any level, but happy the guy is really the first minority GM. Perhaps he's shown some acumen, but then again some of the old white boys even recently probably haven't had GM experience for their first stints, even into the 2000's. Hope it works out for him.

He's going to need a strong supporting cast around him for this to work but the reality is that short of some miracle drafting and astute moves he's not going to be around for the good days as this is probably the toughest job in the NHL. You have guys like Karlsson and Couture signed into 2027 and Burns and Vlasek right behind them taking up an enormous amount of their allotted cap space. This team is going to get even worse in a few years when those players can no longer play a regular shift (you can argue Vlasek is already there). I'm sure there will be LTIR shinanagens but good luck trying to hide all of those contracts on LTIR with phony injuries. Doug Wilson did just a terrible job on the back half of his term there.

I the lingering Kane contract outcome still really squashes any big money spending until it’s resolved.

Not even close to the same.

At least the ink was dry on his retirement letter before being hired to GM.

Maybe the splash will be a fire sell off for picks.

More on the out of nowhere deal. Maybe it’s more like Risebrough. Though he had a year of HC.

Feels like he retired from playing only a couple of weeks ago.
