Icon48 2022 NHL Draft

Bob McKenzie released his top 16 preseason rankings and the top 10 is really forward heavy.

Savoie really needs to grow.

Of course Wright is the cream of the crop, but color me very interested in Conor Geekie this year as well. Both have a ton of upside as 2 way centres. Geekie reminds of Eric Staal.

On the D side, I expect Nemec to climb into top 5 range with a good season. Lots of eyes on him.

Personally I have never understood the hype for Lambert. However, people could compare to Lundell and Raty and not let him drop.

Danila Yurov was amazing at the U-18’s….

Tied for 5th in the tournament with 11pts in 7 games.

Was it the Michkov effect though? Hard to say. I thought he looked pretty good.

Side note, but Chelyabinsk, for not a huge Russian city, produces some excellent NHL level talent: Gonchar, Kuznetsov, Makarov, Nichuskin, Dadonov, Kalinin, Voynov (ick), Nesterov, Medvedev...

Well, if the Flames are as bad as some people think, we'll at least have some very good options in the top of the draft...

What a dreamy top 10. And a stellar top 3.

Brad Lambert is one of the most American sounding names ever and he's Finnish.

His father is a canadian that went over to play in the finnish league.

Edit: I had it wrong, he went overseas and played in the British league, then was hired as a skills coach in finland. But his dad is from Kindersley Saskatchewan, so he's a prairie boy.

If he's like his brother, he'll be stocky enough that being slightly shorter than NHL average won't be a huge deal.

5'10" 190 isn't at a disadvantage in puck battles vs 6' 175.

This draft seems pretty strong for forwards at the top.

I know Lambert looked crazy fast at the world juniors last year… definitely at a whole other level than anyone else at the tournament. His skating style is very reminiscent of McDavid’s.

A Slovak in the top 5. They are my go to underdog hockey nation. I hope the kid pans out.

I fully expect McDavid to get injured and the Oilers win the lottery again.

Out of that list, Wright, Miroshnichenko, Lambert, and Cooley would be the best skaters according to what I've seen and read. Out of those 4, Lambert would be my choice as the fastest skater, and the best stickhandler-however, I would agree with Monahammer that he's somewhat overrated, as I wasn't nearly as impressed with him at the U-18's as I was with other 16 year-olds in that tourney (he's off to a slow start in Finland this year too, although he's in the Men's liiga). All 4 have been referred to as "elite" skaters at one time or another, and the eye test checks out.

-We all know Wright, he's awesome.
-Miroshnichenko is big, fast, and physical, but his intensity wanes, and he's a bit one-diminsional when it comes to his two-way play.
-Geekie is of course, the brother of Kraken player Morgan Geekie, and they play a similar power game.
-Yurov is big and strong, and plays a competitive two-way game.
-McGroarty is also big and strong, with a robust physical game. Good skater, but will need a bit of work IMO.
-Salomonsson has size at 6'2", has good puck skill, and likes to join the rush. I would say he's above average in the skating department, but he's no burner.

Off topic here but for those of you who play CHEL for NHL21 and seen this name "Wayne Glensky". He's apparently a real player and is eligible to get drafted in 2023 or 2024.
