I mean it’s possible I’m over-simplifying and or missing something, but right now I’m wondering what the big fight was all about during the lockout.
|
The players escalated the cap beyond the revenue targets which helped subsidize other players but in the end cost the best players lots of cash.
In essence they want to re-couple HRR and the cap to lose as little money to escrow as possible.
Because the league is hurting badly for revenue and demographic growth, that means restricting how high the cap can get.
It looks like 81 million might more or less be the hard cap for several years due to the lack of revenue growth from the league side of the equation.
IMO, it's just another in a series of league failures and if I was a player I'd be pretty annoyed that my earnings potential is tied to a league with the worst branding and marketing of any north american sport.

I wrote a post about this a couple of years ago and things have only gotten worse for the league since then:
https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showth...ic#post6281216
Having the cap stall out because the league missed their revenue projections should be a much bigger story than it is.
If you're not growing, you're dying.

The Matthew Tkachuk contract negotiations

It is interesting that Karlsson in his non-stellar season that resulted in his 5.9x 8 had 24 goals and 56 pts both 2nd highest totals on a playoff team. His 18:50 lead all Vegas forwards..... he plays the PP and kills penalties.
His off season was better than Tkachuk's other 2 seasons.
Would it be shocking if Tkachuk falls back from his 77 pt 34 goal season? He has only played at that level one stellar season.
On last year's Flames team their best player put up 74 pts Will he "regress" to 56 points.... his career high up until last year.

He's trying to argue that Tkachuk may regress like Karlsson so giving him a big contract for a long term is foolish.
I don't disagree that the Knights were smart not to do a long term big contract after one terrific year. But he significantly overlooks the fact that Karlsson was not productive at all prior to his trade to the Knights (in contrast to Tkachuk, who's been consistently good and getting better).
So while yeah, you don't want to negotiate after a career year, it's a guessing game. I suspect Tkachuk doesn't have a whole lot more production in him - I think he's a PPG guy but not much more at the end of the day. But I also think he's a guy who will be pretty consistent over the years.

His last sentence is about Giordano maybe he thinks we are discussing his last contract extension?
As well Apparently Tkachuk’s 174 pts in 224 games over 3 yrs since being drafted is equal to Karlsson’s 184 pts in 347 games over 8 yrs since being drafted.

Just no.
If there ever was a one-dimensional player, it's Laine.
And if last season taught us anything, it's that he disappears for the majority of the season. Tkachuk has one of the most complete games of any of the young RFAs, and you don't trade that away.

Karlsson had close to a 30% shooting percentage in his likely career year.
It really wasn't a question of whether he would regress, it was how much he would regress.
Apples and oranges.

Just an FYI 43+7=50, if you'd like to save some typing.

LOL. I guess he meant 43 reg, 7 PO.
But seeing as how Tkachuk scored 34 in the regular season this year (far ahead of Karlsson at that point), and 2 PO goals in 5 games (versus Karlsson's 7 in 20) I'd say it's pretty possible.

Not only one dimensional in that he is offensive minded. It's even more narrow a skill set than that. He shoots extremely well. But he's not a noted playmaker, and doesn't carry the puck that well.

I think the fears that Tkachuk would not be an easy signing are valid. It seems like he will be just as hard nosed as his dad. I hate to be a 'nattering nabob of negativity' but I don't see him getting signed anytime soon, or at least not for <$8.5M. I bet he is asking for $10M.
I really think holdouts affect themselves and the team very badly for most of the season too.

I see him missing some camp. I don't see him missing any games because he is well aware of the effect on his own stats/game. Also I don't think Treliving is a softy on these things, so as hard nosed as he/his agent/his dad may be, so is Tre.

I wish some of the GM's would have the balls and smarten up these entitled money hungry millenials and have them sit out and see it attitudes change. GM's are there own worst enemies... starting with Dubas.

Bingo had some calculations I did not understand, which indicated the longer into the season this goes, the less we can pay him due to a cap calculation??

Nylander cap hit last year was over 11 mil. If Tkachuk holds out it puts pressure on flames every day to sign him
