Icon26 Blue Jackets sign Mikhail Grigorenko (1 year $1.2 mil) UPD: NHL rejects contract

Another NHL chance for one of the enigmas of the 2012 draft class. Had 46g 70a in 147 KHL games since he last played in the NHL.

$1.2 million AAV for Grigorenko per Johnston.

Good value project for CBJ -- they have plenty of room up front.

Decent signing for the Blue Jackets. Low risk, Medium reward. Nothing to lose pretty much.

So are they saying that Grigorenko has to wait until July 1/whenever UFA opens?

Yeah pretty much, they have to wait until the window opens.

Wonder if another team could outbid or convince him to sign elsewhere in the mean time.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
On the NHL’s rejection of the contract that CBJ submitted for Mikhail Grigorenko for the 20-21 season, it could be as simple as CBJ/Grigorenko re-submitting the contract when the 2020-21 UFA period opens (July 1 or later if 19-20 hockey is played in the summer).

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
That said, as I understand it, now that contract has been submitted by CBJ and officially rejected by NHL, if either CBJ or Grigorenko decide not to submit/sign new contract, either party would be within their rights to do so. Not saying that will happen, but it’s an option.

Was Alexander Barbanov of the Maple Leafs who just signed about a week and a half ago a valid signing because his contract is an ELC?

Yes, he was a draft-related UFA, so he could be signed to a contract that starts next season.

In 2017, when they didn't give him a qualifying offer after his last contract expired.
