Friedmans "Night before the draft" thoughts
Quote:
According to several sources, Chicago and Columbus are taking another run at a Seth Jones trade. During the first attempt, the Blue Jackets discussed Kirby Dach or Alex DeBrincat as the centrepiece, but it wasn’t something the Blackhawks wished to do.
What the two teams are trying to do is find common ground without including either of them; finding another mix of Chicago’s young players, prospects and high draft picks. (The Blackhawks are scheduled to select 12th in the first round.) It is believed they are one of the teams that could secure a long-term commitment from Jones.
We’ll see where this goes, and who — if anyone else — enters the chat.

A unique, but valuable case could be newly-minted Stanley Cup champion David Savard, because word is he’s more willing than some of his peers to consider Canadian destinations. One GM said Thursday that he’s hearing more and more from players that they prefer not to play in Canada. “It’s a real thing,” he said, mentioning taxes, social media and tighter pandemic restrictions.

Best line about the unpredictability of this draft? One exec said, “Someone’s going to take a player (Friday) and I’m going to say, ‘Holy #$%&, we had him in the fourth round!’

We should sticky the discussion on how the tax situation pans out across states and provinces. The gist of it is that if you have a decent accountant, the differences are not really that great. I don't expect players to really know the score there, but agents and GMs sure should.

Social media, definitely. Pandemic restrictions? Lol. Taxes? Minor.
Climate is a much bigger issue. Metropolitan cities would be up there. Getting hounded by fans too, not online but out in the real world. Then throw in the trashy mainstream media.

Lifestyle has to be a biggest concern. Tough to blame young players or even families for wanting to live in US.

I think some agents like perpetuating the tax difference narrative so they can leverage more money out of some markets.

Climate makes way more sense than those other factors.
Social media is as much an issue in most american markets too... The thing about social media is it is not contained to any specific region. Anybody, anywhere, across the league or across the world can talk #### about you now.

Geez… if Jones is on the table I think I’d be pretty tempted to consider DeBrincat… Dach I get being gunshy on though.

social media?
Not exactly sure how that is specific to Canadians? Unless it means people in Canada talk more about hockey or @ players more? Considering Canada is like the size of California, I am not sure how that is even remotely true?
The pandemic restrictions is a little odd too... I mean public health is a pretty big thing...
Some strange comments that I don't really see as being issues...

Lol taxes. They barely make a difference. Taxes being a lot lower in the US is a myth. Example: taxes in Illinois are very comparable to Alberta. Taxes in California are much higher than Alberta and Illinois. There are a few zero state tax teams as well but I would be shocked if athletes had tax structures the same as normal people working jobs. I’m pretty sure they would be incorporated and their incorporated company would be the one getting paid? Perhaps someone who has more knowledge on this can share their thoughts. I’ve lived in various parts of the US and Canada….I have never seen a major tax difference.

We pick 13th. But the 12th selection in the first round, thanks to the cheating coyotes.

Doesn't help that the Canadian teams consistently struggle.

In that regard, the high pressure culture around the game does factor into that heavily.
However, a pretty decent number of teams have made the finals in the last couple decades. I'd say it's terrible luck that all of those teams lost. But when it gets into game 6/7 and the whole country is buzzing, there is a different pressure.
I'm glad that it ####ed the Oilers and Canucks fortunes though.

I'm not an expert, but doesn't it depend on your bracket? Like for the average person in Canada and the U.S., the differences are minor, but for the extremely wealthy, the U.S. system favours the rich?

Arizona doesn’t get to pick. Therefore we select 12th.

Alberta and Canada tax brackets are lower than, as mentioned California, for incomes over 1M.
With the way that hockey players work in different tax regions, accountants can easily lower overall tax rates regardless of home team.

Our pick is still officially going to be pick #13. Arizona’s pick #11, is going to be “forfeited”, but the numbers after that pick aren’t going to change. This is similar to last year. Yan Kuznetsov was pick #50, even though he was the 49th player picked.
